The gold men have controlled the
finances of the country ever since
John Sherman struck down silver
by cheating congress into the pass
age of a bill which contained a pro
visionjto that end, says the Cincin
nati Enquirer. He was able to
thus cheat congress by falsely stat
ing that the bill if passed would
continue the lull and free coinage
of "a silver dollar which would
float all over the world, and be the
equivalent in value of the five
franc piece of France." That was
more than twenty four years ago.
The only relief the people havo had
from the effects of that piece of
legislative dishonesty was when
their represenativua partially re
stored Bilver coinugo ub a compro
mise with the emissaries of Wall
Street in Washingvon. Seeing that
free coinago was about to be re-established,
Wall Street was able to
put limitations on the coinago.
Accordingly from I87S to 1892 nn
avorage of fcrty millions of dollars
a year was nddod to the volumo of
monoy in tUia country by the pur
chase of silver bullion and ila use
as monoy. That was the period of
which Thomas B lloed spoke in tho
last campaign as an era of pros
perity. Benjamin Harrison de
clared in his message of December,
1890, that the Shormau purchnse
act, which provided for the purchase
of four million of ounces of silver
per month had givon "an upward
tondoncy of trade," and had had
beneficial effi'ots, as was the inten
tion of its authors. He was one of
its authors. An era of prosperity
reforred to by Mr Uood was stopped
short by a coalition betweon the
ropublican party and theClovcUnd
Administration in 1S93, by the
repeal of the Shorman purchase act
and the absolute cessation of any
further purchase of silver or pro
vision for its coinage. Since that
year tho country has been in the
depths of despair,

of money must continue to be
steadily contracted until it is rein
forced by a return of silver coinage.
The gold standard is contraction,
because the supply ot gold from
year to year does not equal the in
creased use for money. ' Substan
tially all that is produced goes into
the arts, and is not to be had for
coinage.
These are plain truths, and if
thoy are carefully read they will
lead candid men to but one result,
and that is that the gold studard
is the enemy of prosperity, and the
enmy of all business of a legitimate
character. It is as much the enemy
of legitimate banking as it is the
enemy of all other interests. It
serves only financial wreckers who
feast and fatten on the misfortunes
cf individuals, corporations and
governments. The remedy is in
the hands of the people.
