A PKEf.OClOtS PEOPLE.
Oregon, or rather the territory,
now cocopoti'&g Oregon, wu ri'.Ler
previous in tr ioUut dzji. The
old fio&er Mievvi in ear! n-ar
riagea and were not i.'ow in Igi!a
ting concerning them. Care Mar
tin, of the Secretary of State' office,
baa ben delving among historic
records in the ilate department and
gives the following:
"A Jaw of the provisional legis
lature of Oregon1 Jane 22, 1844,
made it legal for males over the age
of sixteen and females over twelve
to marry, the consent of the par
ents being given."
"An act of the provisional legis
lature of Oregon of December 12,
1815, authorized the ministers of
lli goapel, justices of the supreme
03urt, of the circuit ourt and jus
tices of the peace to perform mar
riage ceremonies. This was abjut
the earliest legislation on this sub
ject in Oregon."
The people ol this day and date
would hold up their hands in hor
ror at the idea of uniting boys of
16 and girls of 12 in the holy bonds
of matrimony. Yet that often
happened, and old settlers have
told us that such marriages seldom
went amiss. Xo such things as
separations and divorces were heard
of in the pioneer days of Oregon.
A TKIP1.E ALLUSCK.
A union of the democrats, popu
lists and free silver republicans was
formed in Iowa the other day. 1550
delegates were present at the con
ventions. Among other things the
chairman said:
"We concede the natural super
iority of some men oyer others, but
we never concede that Roekerfel
lcr's brain is 20,000 times bigger or
5000 times more active than other
people's brains. Not content with
controlling the coal fields, ore de
posits, oil fields, timber supplies,
provision market, labor market,
transportation lines, telegraphs and
telephones; not satisfied ith owing
the executive, judiciary, congress,
most of the state legislatures, and
the entire metropolitan press, these
multi-millionaires have determined
to possess themselves of the vast
additional power of controlling the
people's finances."

A communication on l)r Chap
man and Stnto University affairs
appeared the othor day in the Ore
gonian signed "onk who did jnit
HtoN tiik I'Ktitios." A friend fur
nishes what wo consider almost
positive proof that tho signature
was in accordance with the facts.
The publication of the letter oc
curred very shortly after Dr Chap
man, his wife and a couple of ladv
frionds held quito a lengthy con
sultation in a business oflico on
Willametto street. No, the writer,
or writers of the letter did cot sign
the petition asking for Dr Chap
man's removal.
Wo know who did. One half
the number who graduated under
Dr Chapman about a month ago
signed it; about thirty reputable
business men, responsible cilir.ons of
Kugono signed it. Thore is no
doubt about that.
