MONDAY
JUNE 21
... AN UNCALLED FOE ATTACK.
Citizons of Eugene, who years
ago went down in their pockets for
$50,000 to secure the location of the
State University, are not tendering
tlie Oregonian nny thanks for the
uncalled for and offensive sugges
tion that it possibly could be moved
to Bomo other locality. Offensive
because it calls in question the
good name of our town and the
character, fairness and integrity of
our citizens, and entirely uncalled
for as anyone giving the subject the
least attention muBt know that the
university location is a permanent:
one and cannot he shutlleccckeii
from place to place to suit the
whims and prejudices of a low
inalcoutonts.
But the Orogoniun uever has
treated the university decently, and
no one noed be surprised at the
last attack of this hator of universi
ty and higher education by the
Blate. The only wonder is thai
a paper of the charaoter and stand
ing of tbo Oregonian should go out
of its way to attack and offend a
community which it well knows
ranks second to none in the stale in
point ot character, intelligence and
publio spirit of her citizens.
There had been no contention in
tho university until it was saddled
with Dr Chapman, and we opiae
his continued presenco cannot but
act aa an irritant. With tho re
moval of this hieh priced exneri-
merit all cause of friction wifl bo at
nil end, He haB caused it and all
tho blame must be lam to his 111-
cxper'umco and incompetency. In
tho meantimo the Oregonian should
not allow ita judgment to be led
astray by someone, who is preju'
diced and ooriaiuly doos not under
stand the situation.
UOCTOtt CHAPMAN, ANSWEltl
Dootor Chapman, stand up and
answer! How was it that you
did not drop Regent Bollinger's
son from tho university rolls when
he had but 2 points to his credit,
then remain silent while- stu
donts llowo, Cherry and Whipple
with 7 0 and 12 points respectively,
and others with 4 to 12 credits
were forced to quit the university?
How was it you refused to put the
motion to suspend young liullinger
for luck of oreilit?
Do not sulk and rofuso to answer
and send out word that these ques
lions are asked because of local prej
vulico, but call up somo of your lit
tout manhood and givo the publio
information on this important
subject.
Then you and J ml go liullinger
both might answer how it was that
with charges pending against you
and a petition for your removal on
file, Judge Bolliugor boenmo your
guest and accepted of your hospi
tality. Is it good form and pro
priety for tho accused to privatnly
entertain the judge and jury who
must pass upon his case? Stand
up Doctor Chapman and answer
these quesiions. You cannot
longer play tho baby act and cry
out "local prejudice."
The keenest interest is apparently
felt by all classes in the duily re
ports which newspapers give us
of the progress of legislation in re
gard to the tariff. There appear
to he more money in large Eastern
cities waiting to bo called into !
action by a fiual tellluinent of the,
tiiriff question than ever before ;
in the history ol the country. Eu-'
ropean money centers are also glut
ted with accumulations, largely
mado in fear of political complica
tions, and it may be that tint re
maining months of 1897 are to be
characterized by clearing skies on
both sides of the water, and a Bteady
procession ol investors carrying
funds from their hiding places to
the public markets for investment.
Many think lliut such will he the
case, and probably despite the ex
traordinary dullness a uoucb larger
number thaa usual aie watclv.ng
the markets with interest.
Lane county has been kindly
cartd for this time. Abundant
rains while little, if any, fell lower
down the valley.
In curing con
sumption there's
nothinglike taking
Time Ey the fore
lock. Doctors say
consumption can't
be cured : they
have arguments to
prove it. But when
tney see it cured
right under their
face and eves by
Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery,
they admit that there's something wrong
about their arguments and something
wonderful about the "Discovery." It
isn't miraculous. It won't cure every
case ; but it cures a suprisingly large per
centage of cases , even when the patient
is pretty far gone with a bad cough, and
bleeding from the lungs, and reduced al
most to a shadow, consumption is a
blood disease. The lungs want a fresh
supply of pure rich blood and plenty of
it ; that is what the "Golden Medical Dis
covery" gives them. It is a blood-maker.
It gives the blood-making functions
power to produce a large quantity of the
nourishing red corpuscles which make
healthv lifc-irivinsr blood. This stops the
wasting; drives out the impurities; heals
the ulceration and begins a rapid mmu-ing-up
process, of solid, substantial flesh
and vital energy.
It isn't only consumptives who need
the " Discovery." It cures every form of
chronic blood-disease and all scrofulous
and eruptive affections.
Mr. Isaac E. Downs, of Sprmx Valley, Rork
Jamt CniiHtv, N. K, writes ! " Por three yeara X
had suffered from thnt terrible disease, consump
tion, ami heart-disease. Ilefore taking Doctor
Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery 1 had wasted
owny to a skeleton: could not sleep nor rest, and
many limes wished to die to be out or my misery.
Step by step, the sl;ns and realities of returning
licallll slowly but mrely developed thcmselvca
while taking the " Discovery." Today I tip the
acnles at one-huudrcil-and-eishty-seven, and am
well and strong. The 'Golden Medical Discov
ery ' has also cured my daughter of a very baa
ulcer located on the Hindi. After trying almost
everything without success we purchased three
bottfes of your 'Discovery' which healed it
perfectly." Yours truly,
9U
