At the New England dinner
hold in thecity of Now York last
week, ex-Minister Phelps was tlio
principal speaker. Ia the course of
his remarks he mado use of tho fol
lowing patriotic words nd exprei-
sions of sentiment to which every
patriotic man in the nation will
say, amen 1 Here are the words
"It seems to me that for a while
we have got to suspend the contest
of party. We have got to postpone
the decision of such indue. There
have got to be concessions on all
sides and self-denial on all sides.
If we do that we may look for pros
perity. If we do not I should be
glad to be informed, because I am
sorry to say that I am unable to
see from what quarter it is to come.
"We have got to have the patri
otism of tho forefathors resurrected;
a patriotism that is above party
and above self; a patriotism that
oxists wlion none were for the par
ty ar.d all wore for the state, ' If
this government is as Lincoln said
it a government of the people, for
the people and by tho people

cannot be a government of the pol

Hob Howard, tho newspapor man,
"was when the Army of tho Cum
berland held its annual reunion
here In 1882. A banquet was giv
en the association at tho National
Home. Goneral Sheridan presided.
In his opening speeoh ho was puz
sled for words, but after a fashion
he managed to stammer out some
thing that but few hoard and loss
understood. I was reporting the
event Tor the Sentinel and had ta
ken down everthing Sheridan said
just as he spoke it. Whon he got
through he came to mo and said:
"Look here, Mr Reporter, do you

Howard made up a dainty little
speech for the commander of tho
American army, which greatly
ploaaed him.
A few years later, when ho was
on duty at Washington, Howard's
duties frequently took him to head
quarters and he always met a
hearty woloomo. The first timo he
called Shoridun said: "Oh yes, I
remember you. Yor aro the in nn
who made that nice little speech
for me in Milwaukee."
On several occasions ho intro
duced Howard lo his friends as the
author of the bost speeoh he ever
made.
