MONDAY,
DECEMBER 21
ME CORBETT PAYS THE FREIGHT.
The Republican St Helena Mist,
U S Senator MoBrido'e official or
gan talks thusly: "Mr H W Cor
bett has come to ba a great man all
at once in the opinion of a few Port
land p iliticians, and there are sev
eral of tbem just now using his
name in connection . with the
United States senatorship, not be
cause they want tbe old gentleman
elected, or even imagine tbat be
will be elected; but be is a wealthy
man, and by making him believe
he has a certain following bis "leg
can be pulled" for boodle with
which to defeat Mitchell. The old
gentleman is childish and a little
taffy pleases him very much; in
deed so much tbat from his mil
lions be, no doubt, cheerfully con
tributes, liberally to the follows
who are out for boodle, but whose
real purpose is to make a cat's paw
of Mr Corbett and get him to put
up the money with whioh to defeat
Mitohell in the hope that Mr Joseph
Simon may go to the senate.
Mr Corbott, no doubt, is in good
faith the same as John F Caples
was for the nomination for con
gress last spring, but the use of his
name at this time is for the sole
purpose of making him pay the
campaign expenses of another
whose name will be put forward
whenever the opportunity presents
itself. In tbe case of Mr C iples
lastspting they wanted to use his
ability and influence, with Mr Cor'
bett they warn to use bis money.
The first object of this small ag
gregatlon of boodle politicians is to
oreate dissention sufficient to pre
vent Mr Mitchell's elootion, and if
tbat is accomplished with Mr Cor
bott'e money that gentlounn will
be brought to the stern realization
tbat ho has performed his part in
the political drama and he will bo
oast, aside and the author of the
play will be presented.
Those who have watched the
drift of the proceedings closely agree
tbat this is the ostensible purpose
of the opposition to Mitoholl, aud
ooming events will, no doubt, soon
demonstrate the truthfulness of the
prediction. One thing is certain,
Mr Corbott's name is not being
used with the belief that he stands
the sligbost chanoe of success."
Tbe agriculture department, has
made an appeal for tbe observance
"bird day" throughout the coun
trv. The obiect is to instruct the
people generally and tbe young in
particular, in the value of our na
tive birds and tbe means cf pro
tecting them from wanton destruo
tion. The idea is a good one acd
should receive generous support
from people of all clause?, especial
ly in the rural district.
If Senator Corbett gets into the
senatorial fight it will be the case
of a "goose being well plucked" by
the politicians.
