Then ho tunic! his lack upon Jules,
who strutted out with n tipsy defiance and

This, then, was the secret of Hortenso

pulso the poor one Should he write to
Hortenso and upbraid her for her insincer

Each moment that ho thought of tbe
falthlessnosa ot liorteuse augmented hia
anger aud caused a desperate craving fur
action. The next morning bo Informed
Constant & Co. that ho must retiro from
hla office, aa it waa his intention to Join
the ranks of the Fronoh army as n private
soldlor.
My dear Lcmolno, " sold Henri Con
stant, "this is simply quixotic. Tho war
Is not one ot self defense, but one of ambi
tion." Louis was roftiluto, however, In his plan
of action.
"Well," sighed Ilunrl Constant, "if you
are decided, there's an end. Wo must give
you a year's leave, though goodness knows
how wo slmll conduct tho business without
you."
Louis smiled bitterly.
In tho lust your ot tho empire, as In the
llual days of the previous one, haste and
precipitation took tho place of oare and
caution. The soldiers were rushed through
their drills with ns little attention as waa
applied to their kits, tho ono object in view
being that of having a largo army to take
the field as soon as war should have been
declared. Tho provisions lndtsponsable for
the campaign wcro considered as duly sup
plied on the strength of those official re
turns which were accepted as unimpeach
able, tho supplios of the ammunition itself
being almost taken as n matter of course.
All this waa too soon realised before tho
fatal month ot August had but little nioro
than half run Its oourso, each day bringing
tho outnumbered Frenchmen nearer to
their doom in the disastrous year of 1870.
Tho defeats of Gravelotte and Ueaon
ville bad compelled tho retreat of the forces
into Metz, leaving many of the wounded
to the promiscuous attention ot the victor.
Without asserting that they were worse
cared for than were those wounded on the
conquering aide, it is certain that tho
French soldiors who were left on the field
had a very bod time of it In the crowded
shelters which woro improvised as hospi
tals the dangers that were not the least
terrible arose from gangrene and pyaemia,
and the symptoms of those fatal develop
ments quickly doomed their sufferers to
tho Inferno o'er which might have been
written the dread warning, "Abandon
hope, all yo tliat enter here. "
Among this crowd of tho doomed victims
of the lust of empire and the pride of
power were two Freuch soldiers hurriod in
with tho rest. One had suffered amputa
tion of both bis logs; tho other had been
tho victim of a breast contusion, caused
from tho fragments of an exploding shell,
and was in poril from tho shock: rather
thau from tho gravity of the effects of the
wound, which could not ba considered se
rious. In any case he had boon brought to tliat
pesthouse hastily and Improperly, for there
was no sign of gangrene or blood poison
ing In his symptoms.
As the former rolled his head from side
to sido upon tho straw sproad over tho
earth of tho shod whero he lay, his eyos
foil upon the form of his neighbor.
"Heavensl" he exclaimed. "Am I madf
Louis Lemolno, for ho you must be, how do
I find you a oomrndo lu this aooursed
placef"
For & momont the other was struck, si
lent In hla astonishment,
"Jules," bo at last gasped, "do wo moot
under suoh ft cloud of misery What you
revealed to me mado Ufa uncndurablo, and
the day after you left me I volunteered In
the service to which I had already supplied
a substitute. I wanted to die."
The heaving chest of Jules, who was
past all physical suffering, betrayed a
mental torture.
"Louis," bo stammered, "forgive ma 1
shall soon have to plead for pardon else
where. I was onvlous of all your good
fortune I felt that but for you Hortense
might be mine. When I saw you so safe
and prosperous and happy, the devil got
possession of my heart. 1 went away and
wrote the letter which I showed you. II
was not written by Hortenso. I used one
of her notos to mo to copy hor writing. It
was a forgery."
As If suddonly electrified, Louis sprang
from the straw with tho Impulse of venge
ance in his soul. But as he looked at the
poor, dying wretch, who waa of tho same
blood as bis, compassion conquered anger,
and stooping down ho kissed him and
whispered, "I forgive."
It waa only In time. The exolteiuent
had exhaused the little strength of the
moribund eoldler, who sank down In bis
wretched bed, olostng his life with peni
tence and confusion. Like a dreaming
man, Louis left this Walhalla of misery,
where tho boroes changed their shout, for
Taterland and la pa trio to dying groans
and ahrleks of agony. No one took mnch
account of those hopeless men, and thua
Louis emerged from tho place unnoticed
and mixed with others who wero prisoners
like himself, wounded and bora ds com
bat, awaiting tho outcome of events whloh
they could no longer lnduonca. - If all had
suoh heavy grief at heart as ho bad, heaven
help them!
More than a year had paaaed when Mine.
Dupula and her daughter returned to Parts
to find their homo wrecked during the rule
of the comniuiie and at last to put them
selves In communication with thsir own
countrymen. Thoy had hoard from Henri
Conatant, In reply to their inquiry, that
Louis had joined the army, but the disor
ders of the year had prevented any further
communication with him.
"I regret, ladies," said Henri Coostoint,
"that we have no news of Loroolne. lis
waa missing after Gravelotte, and I fear
that he must have been left upon the Held
of battle."
As Hortense beard the words that doom
ed her Ufa, the color left bcr cheek and
ahe would have swooned on the floor bad
she not been rauaht In the arms of Louis,
who entered that moment.
"Ah, Louis," aheaald, "where hove you

lent so long u tlmef"
"Doorest," he whispered, "It la a secret
of tbe dead. M. Constant," be went on,
