kaktrrn OFFICE 10 to 234 Toronto Court,
New York City. E. KATZ, Agent.
SATURDAY, - NOVEMBER 21.
Our electrio light system and
tbeater works are among the
best in the state.
A pork packing establishment
right here in Eugene would pay a
good profit, and employ a few men,
and help our farmers at the same
time.
One of the evidences of prosper
ity in Eugene following McKin
ley'a election is a reduction in the
Bizeofthe Register by the discon
tinuation of a supplement.
The present old shack in Eugene,
by courtesy called an opera house,
should be condemned by the city
council at its next meeting. It is
a menace to life every time a gath
ering is held within its four walls.
At two o'clock on Wednesday,
November 4, the sales of the New
York Journal lor that morning
hadreaobed 958,991, and of the
German edition 83,893. This is
the highest watermark ever readied
by a Newtyork daily.
The Iowa savings bank of Sioux
oity,Ia., olosed its doors last week,
on account of heavy withdrawls on
deposits and inability to realize on
securities. The Paul Mill Co. of
Menash, Wis., has also made an
assignment. Are these signs of re
turning prosperity?
The demooraoy of Omaha have
little in common with those so
oalled demoorats who bolted the
Chicago ticket. The Jacksonian
olub of Nebraska, a pioneer demo
oratio organization, at a rooent
meeting, ordered the pictures of
secretaries Morton and Carlisle
removed from the walls of its club
rooms, and struck from it rolls the
names of secretary Morton, Col.
John P Irish, of California; Tobias
Castor, ex-national committoman;
James Wool worth, president of the
American Bar Association, ; and
about 40 others, for what the reso
lution recited as "active and upun
opposition to the regular ttomti
oratio nominees, and aiding tho
election of the republican candi
dates." It has been decided by the post-
oflico department to experiment in
the way of a rural free delivery of
mail. Under the authority of con
gress the postofHce department will
establish, as rapidly as possible, a
free rural delivery in 80 counties
scattered throughout tho country.
The intontion is to deliver mail by
mounted carriers to farmers rcsid
ing within a radius of three and
one-half miles from the city limits.
There has been considerable die
oussion as to the practicability of
the scheme. In the East, where
the farming districts aro thickly
settled and the roads good, the
plan is practicable and it would be
a much appreciated convenience
to the farmers; but, as this new
system would be quite costly and
here in the Wost our postal service
being badly crippled by the laok of
means to carrv on the service, it
would seem best to wait until nil
the country offices were supplied
with a dai ly mail service before this
free delivery scheme is put into
effect.

Discussing the Branch Asylum
decision, the Union Republican
says: The Salem hog is already
laying plana to bleed the
people farther in building up. its
town at the State's expense. It
wants asylums and schools built
therefor idiots, morphine fiends,
inebriates, feeble minded and those
overtaken by poverty an,f physical
debility. Silem don't eifgr ex
pense so long us the statfciots the
bills. But the legislature should
make no appropriations for more
permanent institutions there until
the matter of changing the consti
tution can be submitted to the peo
by time. They are intended to cure con
stipation. They are good for men, wo
men and children. They are tiny, sugar
coated granules, very easy to take, very
quick in their action. One " Pellet "is a
gentle laxative, two "Pellets" a mild
cathartic. A great many people make,
the mistake of "sandbagging1' their di
gestive organs. Tbey take some strong
and violent medicine, which creates
worse troubles than it cures. Strong
purgatives shock the system unnecessar
ily, and they do not cure constipation.
Constipation is a thing that makes peo
ple listless and languid; makes tnclr
breath bad; wakes them up with foul
taste in their mouths; puts black spots
before their eyes; makes them dluy;
causes headache) makes them bilious;
produces pimples and blotches runs into
all sorts of serious consequences. All this
is cured by Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Pellets
cured absolutely, perfectly, permanently.
