MONDAY, - SEPTEMBER 21.
THE LONDON FINANCIAL SEWS.
We take the following editorial
loader from Secretary of Slate Kin
oaid's piper, the Oregon State
Journal:
The article credited to the Lon
don Financial Neivs, which was,
printed in these columns tome
time ago, was clipped from an ex
change sevoral weeks before any
denial of its authenticity appeared.
When it appeared in the Journal
wo was not aware that anybody
doubted that it was authentic
Since then the gold organs have
pronounced it a forgery and the bi
rm'ilists now assert that it did ap
pear in that paper. As we have
been unjustly criticised for pub
lishing a false statement knowing
ly when in fact we supposed it to
be true, we now give the latest ver
sion of the matter, telegraphed
from Chicago, under date of Chica
go, Sopt 12, as follows:
Indisputable proof was received
at National Democratic hcadquar
tors to day of the genuineness of an
article which np poured in the Lon
don "Financial News" undor date
of April 30, 1804, relating to the re
establishment of hi metal is m in the
United States. The articlo in
question declares that tho rumoneti
zation of silvor would ruin Eng
lish trade and enablo Americans to
scoop Great Britain out of the
world's markets.
Tho publication, a fow weeks ago,
of this surprising declaration by
the "Financial Nows" by soveral
American freo-Bilvor papers, arous
ed the llanna combination
to the pitch of doepertation,
and in their extremity they
doniod tho authenticity of the ar
ticlo and purported to furnish ado-
nial of the same by tho editor of
tho "Finanoial News." This led
to an inquiry in London as to
wbothor the "Financial News" of
that date really did contain such
an article. In rosponso to this in
quiry the national democratic head
quarters has now in its possession
a certified oopy of the articlo in
question, clipped from the London
"Financial Nowb" of April 30, 1894
by the Durant Press Cutings, a re
sponsible firm doing business at
157 Holborn viaduot, London, Eng
land. The clipping in question is certi
fied to have boon taken from the
London "Financial News" of said
da to, and includes not only the
matter hithorto printed by the
American papers, but also con
tains the entiro editorial upon the
lams subject, which is entitled
"England and the Silver Question."
The following brief extract from
tho editorial indicates the sensa
tional character of tho entiro ar
ticle, and will prove a most formi
dable argument for the romoneti
tation of silver in tho United
States:
Thore is a pi tin moral in tho re
mark that if United States
would venture to cut licrsolf adrift
from Eurojiv and take outright to
ilvor she would have all America
and Asia a I her bark and the
command of tlu markets of both
countries. The barrier of gold
would ha more fatal than any bar
rier of a custom-homo. The bond
of silvc would be stronger than
any bond of free tride. There can
bo no doubt about it that if the
United States were to adopt a sil
vor basil tomorrow British trade
would bo ruined before the yei
was out. Every American would
be protected not in home, hut in
every other market.
Of course the United States
would suffer to a certain extent
through having to pay her obliga
tions abroad in gold, but the lo3s
of exchange under this head would
bo a mere drop in the bucket as
compared to the profit to be reaped
from the markets of South Ameri
ca and Asia, to say nothing of Eu
rope. The marvel is the U
have not long ago soized the op
portunity. It has been a piece of
luck that it has never occured to
tho Americans to scoop us out of
tho world's markets by going on a
silver basis, and it might serve us
right if irritated by the contempti
ble apathy of our government to
ward the silver problem, the Amer
icans retaliated by freezing out
gold. It could be easily done.
If vou could look
ahead a few months
and see what was
coming from those
spells of weakness,
loss of appetite,
wasting of flesh
and energy you
wouldn't wait for
disease to get a
grip on you. you
would begin right
away to tone up
your constitution
with Dr. Pierce's
LOOKING AHEAD. Golden MedicaJ
Discovery. It doesn't work miracles;
but it does what other medicine can't do
and what doctors say can't be done un
til they see it done right under their noses
it cures consumption. Not always ; to
say that would be an exaggeration, but
in a large majority of cases ; in advanced
cases which have been given up as hope
less. The " Discovery " is not called a con
sumption-cure ; it is a blood-maker. It
gives energy to the blood-making organs
to create new blood, full of healthy red
corpuscles. This rapid supply of pure,
rich, red blood drives out all diseases that
have their roots In the blood : Consump
tion is one of these ; scrofula, malaria,
eczema, erysipelas, catarrh are others.
It is absurd to doctor them separately as
lum?. or skin, or head diseases. They
must be driven out of the blood. You
can rely on tho "Golden Medical Dis
covery " to do this every time.
It is not a patent medicine. It is the
perfected result of 30 years, practical ex
perience by one of the most skillful phy
sicians and eminent medical authorities
in this country: Dr. R. V. Pierce, Chief
