The Hop Outlook.
.Salem Statesman: A number of
hop dealers were seen yesterday in ref
erence to the outlook for the present
year's hop crop. A majority of them
report hops in sjdendid condition, the
recent rains having Improved them
wonderfully. Where the llelds have
b3en thoroughly cultivated good
heavy crops will be picked and tlio
quality, from present prospects, will bo
exceptionally finu. TIm fields which
have been cultivated poorly, of ccurso,
will not make a very good yield, in
many cases not paying for picking and
curing, In some llelds, however, the
Vines aro pale and appear lifolcHS and
many poles are bare. Many of the
growers, who are not members of the
different associations, aiu talking of
p tying 30 cents per box of nine bushels
for picking hops, while the association
men uie determined to pay only 23
cents. Tlio former claim they will be
unable to secure pickers at t ho lower
price, nor will they be able lo have as
good work done as tliey will secure
under the higher price. Trices of hops
arestiil very low and the market will
hardly t eu for more than G cents per
pound for a choice article.
Dealers aro not very hopeful of a
good market this full, for tlio reason
that heavy sto. ks of old hops me still
being held by brewers and speculators.
The output of Oregon tills year will be
about one-half of last year's crop, and
from appearances now, dealers mid
growers alike feel confident that the
grade of the new Imps will average far
above that ol last year.
It is tlio big wheat yields that are re
ported. Here is one from Linn
county: The I D Miller crew threshed
1754 bushels of wheat oil 50 acres of the
Ed Kuox farm, owned by 8 E Yonng
and reti led by Thus Chambers. This
is an average of over 30 bushels. One
thousand two bundled and sevcuty-
ix bushels of it were threshed in tlio
forenoon.
