"Mary where is Mary?" ho asked faint
ly. " Tho ono who woro tho roses gone?
Can't you (lud her Is sho lost lost?"
There was n tremor in tlio thin weak
voice, u piteous wail on tho lips which for
so long a time poverty and degradation
laid taught to framo only curses, und tho
woman who had grown lianl and cruel iu
the same school began to rock to and fro
m mute ngonv.
She did not reply, and again ho moaned,
"Mary, is slio lost lust?" Then tho pet
lines about her mouth relaxed somewhat.

Ihoyollliit girl ulaeed tho roses on ihn

when sho returned. 'J hem was u pnekngo

Tho woman before her was still young.
but privution, misery, wrong doing had
had their way. Keeling was stilled, tho

rcauml this, ihe Kit Mat Inn was not whol
ly now, for it is pitifully truo that "tho

Sho knew nil this ami thought to warm to
iresh life tlio soul which sat In darkness.
So sho looked nlKjut the room mid said
again, "Tim has gone," but thero was
only a nod und a blank gazo for reply, and
she turned to open her iiaeknge. A not iter
woman entered at t lie moment. Tho girl
spoko with her, and then tlio bundle of
nigs in tho mother's nrms which enwrapt
tho baby was taken by tho new comer nnd
curried nwny. Now the girl busied her
self nliout tho room. She had given a por
tion of the contents of her mekagc to tho
woman who took tho luiliv. The others
she loosened and licpin to display.
Thero was an older child. Sho talked to
him and now mid then to tho mother, but
no replies wero mnde.
After nwhilo there was a llttlo stir nt tho
door. Tho woman, who had left them,
returned nnd went direct to tho mother.
Toward her she held n buhy. It wus c&nu

Llttlo rings of golden luiir lay damp on
the forehead, and eyes as blue as heaven
smiled, though tho poor littlo fuco was
pinched and wan. lho mother looked nt
it, then nt tho woman.
"Where's my babyf" sho u.tkctl a little
fiercely. "Bring my linby."
The girl sle)ied forward nnd took tho
llttlo ono in her arms. "This is your own
baby," sho answered very tenderly, com
ing nearer and holding it toward the moth-

to kick him, tho effort causing iny wheel
to wabblo frightfully. Before I could re

down and run over it.
I fell 00 foot, with Mm whnnl ,.f ,...

Tho oanino mob quickly scampered off.
I picked up my safety, nnd finding that
tho wheel was nil right I was about to

I wag rubbing it four or flvo men and a
dozen boys gathered to the spot and regard

Despite my many bruises I was in a
mood to fight tho wholo village. .1 turn nml

and forgetting my injuries I mounted and
rodo off. As I left the village I hoard a
honrso yell behind mo. I now struck a
roiling section, and tho hills roso In con
tinuous undulations. Tho roads wero
rocity nnu graved with winding gullevs.
My progress was fivtrful.
At tho end of this spurt tho road sud
denly forked, nnd iu the absence of n slun
board I was brought to nn abrupt halt, not
having tho slightest idea which prong of

I decided to go to tho neighboring farm
houso and Inquire.
Leaving my wheel In a fence corner, I
struck across tho fields In a trot. I found
tho farmer In his barnyard, and after ho

out Reasoning, I elicited tlio information
thnt tho road to the right led to Feeder.
Arriving nt tho forks, I wns horrified to
find that my wheel was gone. Casting a
hasty look around, I saw a fellow mounted
on it and riding for dear life about 200
yards to the westward. I snatched my re
volver from my pocket nnd rushed madly
after tho thlof, shouting an agglomeration
of throats, broken Imprecations and ab
breviated prayers. I fired a shot at Inter
vals. Tho follow gave a nervous look be
hind, lost his gravity and n minute later
took an awful header. Gathering himself
up, ho abandoned tho wheel, scaled tho
fence and disappeared.
Arriving nt tho spot where ho fell. I
found the faithful safety still uninjured
and was soon on my wnv.
It was now 10 o'clock nnd I a littlo
over"80 miles awny." I began to feel
alarm at tho aspect of tho heavens. In a
?iuarter of an hour tho big drops began to
all, and presently tho rain was pouring
down a veritable deluge.
I went plunging on through mud nnd
rivulet, half blinded by tho rnin, which
tho fitful southeast wind blew Into my eyes
with n pitiless fury. There was but ono
consoling thdlight thnt tho storm had
probably struck my rival first, judging
from its direction.
J was as wet as a human fiotRnm"wnshcd
up by tho sea." My wheel threw mud in
a way fiat was dreadful, flecking my sod
den clothes till I might have been taken
for a winged hog.
At last, just as tho rain began to slack
en, I caught sight of a church spire less
than a mile ahead ana knew that 1 was
about to enter Feeder Station. My heart
thumped with a now excitement.
As I entered tho town I struck tho first
street nt right angles and did not know
whether to turn to tho right or tho left. I
met n man nnd asked him to locate Flight
street (tho one marked on Bessie's diagram
I had forgotten Its relative position).
The citizen said ho lived "four miles In
tho kontry, but guessed Flight street was
to tho left." I didn't hang a second on
tho rustic's uncertainty, but swung nround
In tho direction Indicated. Tho next cross
ing was supposed to be Flight street, and
Bessie's residence was supposed to 1 in
the middle at the north side. I reached
the spot, but tho only building In thnt
square was a red stable. At tho sight of
this I nearly fainted, but without permit
ting myself to Indulge in ooiisn wratn i
asked a street liy to direct me to t light
street. Ho pointed south. I crossed over
and hod hardly reached tho mlddlo of tho
designated street when a mud bespattered
man on wheels dashed up to the sidewalk,
sprang from his vehicle, nnd meeting a
lady at tho gate kissed her.
I merely lifted my hat and rodo on In
