in Salem a week or two ago.
"The entiro class of 74, it is report
ed, came up to the required stand
ard of proficiency." It is hard to
believo that theso 74 men are all
fit to ongago in tho practice of law.
It is moro likoly that not more
than three fourths of these young
"limbs of tho law" will ever bo fit
to engago in serious law practice.
Tho Welcome says: "The craze to
spoil what might otherwise be
made a useful, profitable life, by
joining tho hungry horde of would
bo lawyors, is regrottable but in
ourablo." Many a good black
smith or good farmor was des
troyed jn making this batch of
lawyors. It is all woll enough to
aim high, but it would be much
hotter if tho "standard of profi
oiency" was raised to a highor
lovol, so that instead of entering a
learned profession to starvo or
steal, young men without any
poouliar qualifications for it, would
enter a mechanics shop or under
take to raise something to supply
tho markots.
