GRANGE RESOLUTIONS.
LaBt December the state grange
of Pennsylvania adopted tlio fol
lowing resolutions:
Whereas, The Amorican Protec
tive Tarid League and Homo
Market Club are assumed to bo
well versed in the operation of
protection by a tariff on imports
and aro assumed to bo represents
tive exponents of protection; there
fore bo it
Resolved by the etalo grange of
Pennsylvania, at its regular annual
meeting held at Williamsport, Pa.,
that we respectively, earnestly and
urgently request said Tariff League
and Home Market Club to forward
to the secretary of this state grange
for general publication, replies to
'the following questions:
First Can a tnrifl on imports
directly or indiroclly protect the
homo prioes of agricultural staples
as long as tlio snrplus is sold for
export, and the export and the
homo prico for those am tho same?
Second If it cannot must not
this unprotoctod industry pay for
tho oost of protection of the pro
tected indubtrics?
Third Is not such a system of
protection injuriously unjust and
inequitable, to tho producers of
agricultural staples.
Fourth Will not a bounty on
tho export of agricultural staples
for tho protcotion of their prices in
tho homo market be just and equit
able so long as proteetion by a
tariff on imports is in nperalion?
Tho Amorican Promotive Tariff
Leagno made no reply in tho chal
lenge. For tho offices of sheriff and
olork tlio democrats have nominated
Mossrs. Iloraco Hitinpton and
Sloven Spencer, both native sons of
Lane county. They are not only
doservingly popular but are ulao
competent to (111 the offices in a
first-class manner.
Corvallis Times: The nomina
tion on tho democratic ticket of
JudgoJohn Burnett fur ussociitto
justice of tho supreme court is a
deserved compliment lo an ablo
jurist. A pioneer lawyer of the
state, a citizen of wmtli and a not
able example of a colf-mado man,
Judgo Hurnett if ekvteil would
bring Btrongth and respect to the
supreme court. Many an old
timer in all Willamette v.illoy
counties will cast unirio partisan
feeling in June and drop in a vote
for John Ilurnott.
Brownsville. Times: The plank
in tho Oregon state, platform on
finance is about as easy for a silver
as a gold man to eland upon, still
it does not commit tlio republican
party to any policy. That is
whero it is weak. If it means free
silver, it should Bay bo; if not it
should be equally plain. In lact
silver men rather have tho best of
it. With all the boasted indepen
dence ol tlio republican party i', is
too weak-kneed to como out plainly
on the money question, as do the
democrats.
Contradictory statements some
times creep in on tlio most heartily
wcrkeil lor pioriositiun. Kor in
tttnnco tho Globo-IHmocrnt which
in one of tho moot prononneeil of
tho gold stamlnrd paper?, mid lias
been promulgating the sliitentoiil
that tho only silver advocate were
silver mi no owners mid those in-
terested with them recently
"As a politician, Senator .Carter is
for free silver; but us a business
ni:in, he is part owner of one of the
principle gold mines in Montana."
Boston Herald: The Oregon
democrats dcolarc explicity for free
silver, and tho Oregon republicans
Btruddlo the questions. As between
tho financial planks of tho two
parties, tho democratic position is
entitled to more respect. It is wrong
but it iB not cowardly as well."
Even the Eastern gold bug con
demns thestraddlo proposition. It
is natural for the press of that sec
tion to think that the silver propo
sition is wrong, and their opinions
as to the democratic platform have
no weight in Oregon.

loss of apetite, loss ot sleep, loui bream,

serious things come afterward. Doctor
