Kntered an second-class matter at the Eugene,
Orcfion, poslotllce,
SATURDAY, - MARCH 21. 189G.
Hit. SMITH'S STOKY.
Dr. 15. 0. Smith has beoa inter
viewed by the Oregoninn and tells
the following story about the dis
covery of gold in the Suntinm.
The first excitotnont was in 1859, a
silver craze, and a town sprang up,
but went down. In 1800 with Jan.
and I). II Smith ho began prospec
ting and in the spring of 18G1
reached the present site of Auidem.
In 1862 at Salem he dreamed of
having his pockets full of gold,
and went back and prospected
again. Again lie dreamed of loca
ting a rich lead, lie followed up
the dream and knocked off $300 in
gold at once, and he located the
White Bull. Jerry Driggs was
there at tho time, also a Scotchman
named McDonald. They went to
work on Smith's claim, which he
called the Driggs, and says they
took out $7,000 from top rook.
Tho excitement set in, n-rnutl was
built in at an oxponso of $20,000,
and a 5-statnp mill put up. It
wan leased to Salmon Bros., of
Portland, who took out $G5,000 in
gold. Tho mill wns burned in the
spring of 1805 or 18GG, and after
that nothing was done until recent
ly, when the Luwlur Co. bonded
this and other mines and went to
work. Smith rocoived the prem
luin lor the ursi gold lomxi in
quartz in the Cascade mountains,
consisting of two Indian horns.
The women are coming to time
in good shape. A husband adver
tised his wife us follows: "Notice
My wife having loft my bad and
board, I warn all persons from sel
ling her any goods on my account.
Alfred Horner, Prospertown, N. J.,
February 8, 1890." Did she care?
Not much. Awhile afterwards the
following appeared:. Notice I
would inform the public in general,
and Alfred Homer in particular,
that his credit is in no danger of
being olfored for salo by me, And
as for the bed and board ho speaks
of my leaving there is a mistake
about that, for, from the unfortu
nate day we married until now, he
has never given me either, nor had
he them to give. Therelore the
matter is Oussie paddles her own
canoe. Mrs. Gussio Horner, Pros
pertown, N. J., February 25, 1890.
Ashland Tidings: Tlie University
of Oregon lias ordered a Tutthlll water
wheel to provide power for an electric

St. Helens Mist, Rep: Duly a
few days ago the Orcgonian said any
man who favored Bilvor was a pop
pulist. In tho Baino paper lust
Tuesday this statonioiitocei-rs: "In
a year from now, howover the
presidential (lection goo?, tho
Unitod Stalos is practically niro to
bo republican." Tho Oregonian
appcan a littlo inconsistent upon
this point. Since that paper has
denominated as populists Senators
Unrtor aud Mantle of Montana,
Tollor and Wolcott of Colorado,
Perkins of California, Mitchell of
Orogon, Squire and Wilson of
Washington, Dubois and Slump of
Idaho, and four senator? from
yoming aim Utah, i in so were
nil elected by tho republicans and
nro still republicans notwithstaml
ing tho Orcgonan's efforts to read
thorn out of tho party, liui if the
abovo named senators aro populists
as claimed by tho Orcgoni m, tlirm
in order for tho next senate, lo bo
republican that party must clout
21 senators from tho solid south
noxt year. Tho Oregonian's slate
luonts are as inconsistent as they
aro ridiculous along this line.
"Wo wish," says a Colorado edi
tor, to retract our statement made
last week that our esteemed fellow
citizen, lion. Mr. Pluinley, never
was known to keep his promise.
After reading tho item in question,
Mr. I'lumley happened to remem
ber that during tho heat of tho
recent political contest he promised
to kick us out to tho fair grounds,
and ha immediately came up to
tho oflieo and executed his promise.
In fact, he not only kicked us all
tho way out there, but he kept it
up most of tho way back, and if he
had not run out of breath, we
think ho would havo been kicking
us yet. Mr. I'lumely is gentle
man of his word, cultured r.nd
polished, ami can kick like an
Asiatio elephant. Tit-Hits.
