A Fascinating Opera Ailiiilrniny
Keudered.
Tho opera, "Patlen.e," given by
students of tho university under llie
auspices of the athletic association,
was advertised to begin nt 8 o clock at
Vlllard Hall la-t evening, and by that
time the large room was well tilled
with people III both the pit and the
gallery. It was a fashionable gather
ing and the audience formed a brilliant
panorama of style and beauty.
Temporary curiaius, draped across
the top with Iho college colors, had
been Improvised across the front of the
big stage and at 8:30 p in just as the
audience had begun to think that It
required n great deal of "patience" on
their part the curtain rose. Iho
aceno that was presented to view was
ono of rare beauty which nt once won
the admiration of the audience and
awakened It. deepest Interest lor the
remainder of the. evening. The .Ides
and rear of the stage formed a back
ground of evergreen., consisting of fir
ami cedar, while ill tho center was an
old-fashioned well curb with rope mid
buckets, and on tho east side a small
rocky butte had been improvised.
Across llie front of the stage and about
tho old well were posing and reclining,
In various becoming attitudes, twenty
pretty maidens attired In medieval
costumes and entertaining extremely
icsthelio idea..
The ubovo is but a faint description
of only one of the many pleasing ellccls
that were presented all tho way
through tho opera. Tho dragoons,
com posing twelve students In Uni
form, wero commonplace but had the
desired elTcct. The poets, Reginald
lliinthorno and Archibald Orosveuor,
respectively Harry Teniplelon nnd
Carl NaiTcgiin, wero unique in cos'ume
and Interesting 111 part. The downfall
of the second poet from Ida exalted
and eccentric position In life to that of
a commonpl ice young man and the .a
sudden change of the twonty raptur
ous young ninlden. who adored him
and persisted in following hi. ideas,
was ellectivo In result and gave tho
audionco tho amusing side of the
drama.
The change of the blunt and unal
fracllvo dragoons, who had been ruth
lessly discarded by the foolish maidens
for tho more exulted pools, to the
leitliello for tho purpose of winning
back tho distracted maidens, was one
of the most amusing portion, of Iho
eulerlaliinient.
The choruses, under Hie direction of
Mrs Linn and assisted by Iho violin,
Leu Stevens, flute, Warner Drown,
and viollncello, M O Waruer, nnd
piano accompaniments by Mis. Mao
HufT, were greeted with greatest satis
faction by the audience.
The solos by Mb. Stella Dorris, one
of Eugene', favorlto vocalists, In the
roll of "Patience." wero highly plens
Ing and always brought out a hearty
applause from the enraptured audi
ence. Anioug other, who won fa .'or
In .olo. and duet, were Miss lllancho
Straight, Mis. Lotta Johnston, Mits
Jennie Itcallle, Mis. Theresn Friendly,
Mr Harry Teniplelon, MrCarlNarre
gau and Mr George llaclier. The
duet, "Sing Ilelgh to You," by Mis.
Ileattie and Mr Teniplelon, wa. tho
hit of the evening, and I hey were
twice encored by the enthusiastic au
dience. The entire opera wa. well put ou and
the dilllcult part, wero admirably car
ried out. The music was excellent,
and the cost of characters was good.
