A COMPARISON OF H1TIES.
At the present time when rumors
of war with England seem to be
the uppermost topic in the popu
lar mind; it is a matter of absorb
ing interest to note the respective
naval strength of each of the possi
ble combatants. A classified list
of the relative fighting power of the
two nations is herewith given, as
found in "The Statesman's Year
Book," a publication of the highest
authority, and by which it appears,
that of first class sea-going battle
ships, England possesses' no lea?
than 25, while the United Stater
has only six such vessels. Of sec
ond class battleships England has 9
and third class battleships 1 1 veB
gels, while the United States pos
sesses none of the two last men
tioned classes. Of firBt class
cruisers England heads the list
with 85 vessels and the United
Slates shows but 7 such vessels.
Again, England looms up with 63
second class cruisers to our 13;
third class cruisers, England haB
189, while ; the United States fol
lows a long ways behind with the
ridiculously small number of only
21 ships of that olass. Of torpedo
boats, England has 136, and the
U. S. but 3, or a smaller number
than any other naval power on
earth today. Counting vessels of
all olasses, of modern construction,
and fit for modern warfare, the
total number of vessel in the
British navy available for offensive
and defensive purposes is no loss
than 486, while the total for the
United States is but 67.
"THE ETERNAL FEMIKIN V"
, The eternal feminine is what we
prizo in woman, and whenever she
deflects from this there does her
power wane and her usefulness he
come impaired. And conversely,
the more and the higher she ad
vances along the line of her own
nature, the better for the world.
Nor does the claim that oho has
been hampered hitherto and ;'ou
sequently been unable to bIiow
what her attributes really are, seem
relevant; for it is only when she
develops in direotions which threat
en to olash with the , eternal femi
nine that she encounters opposi
tion or '. serious criticism. And
here even the excitability and un
reasonableness of some mon find a
certain justification. Their fumes
and fury, however unintelligent,
proaeed from an instinctive repug
nance to the departure or deviation
from nature, which they liud or
fear to find in the modern womun.
Once let them realize that there
was no danger of anything of the
kind, and they would become ns
gentle as doves, if not all smiles
and approval. Robert Grant in
the October Scribner's.
- The circuit court of Baker touu
ty has decided that the county
must pay its debts. Action nus
brought to restrain the county
officials from paying off outstand
ing warrants, for the reason the
county's indebtedness was greater
than allowable hy the statu consti
tution, vix: $5000. While stub
dobts are prohibited by the eo-iti
tution, if a county creates it debt it
is still bound to pay it. Tin- court
will not favor repudiation of the
debt if it does repudiate the officials
who oreated it.

The American Beauty owes her pres

to any other attribute. A cup of

Roseburg Review: It is rumored
that Btate Senator Cogswell, of
Lake county, haB returned to the
republican party which he left in
1872 We sincerely hope that, this
is true, since some of the senator's
legislative acts- indicated that he
could never forget his early train
ing. That tat special attorney's
fee of $5000 allowed him in the
general appropriation bill of the
late republican legislature, was one
thing that made the Review won
der "where he was at" politically.

Doctor Pierce. For a great many years
Dr. R. V. Pierce (chief consulting physician

a specialty of the diseases of women, and
from his large experience he was able to
compound a "Prescription" which acted
directly unon the special internal parts of
women, when in doubt as to your ailment

When women are afflicted with nervous
ness, irritability, nervous prostration or ex

out of ten the source of the trouble is some
displacement, irregularity or derangement
of the special internal parts. Dr. Pierce's
