PROSPECTS OF THE HOP-I'ICRINO
MACHINE.
The hop-picking machine is sure
ly coming, although its progress is
necessarily slow. C. C. Green, the
New York state inventor, who has
spent muoh time on the picking
machine, is still at work and con
tinues to see success in the near
future. He has good reason for
sanguine expectations, for he has
already a machine which will pick
hops rapidly and well, but bis ideal
is high and he is not yet satisfied.
Writing to American Ageicultural
iet Mr. Green says:
"I did not send a photo' of my
hop-picking machine because it was
not completely successful in every
way and I had none taken. When
I was ready to go to the field with
the machine, picking had been in
progress several days. ' I made
several experimental attachments
which proved of no value. I also
made a new experimental trial in
the separator of leaves, etc., from
the hops after thev weres picked.
This was of no acoount. It was
then too late to make a separator
after the principle of the one I had
used, which would have showed a
good sample of pioking. I there
fore dressed out by band tlio hops
as they passed on the carrier to the
bag. There is no serious difficulty
in working a separator such as
there has been in working a picker,
only the season for pioking is so
short each year to practice. My
present experience will enable me
to make a reasonably gooJ one
for next season's operations, when
I intend to take oontraots to pick a
few yards, something I could 'not
attempt before. I am now building
a hand maohine for two to feed in
vines, intended to be capable of
picking a kiln of 35 to 40 boxes
per day, a very economical condi
tion for the many small growers of
this state. This maohino is calcu
lated to be moved in the yard as
boxes are now for hand picking. It
is possible I will finish by Febrr.

Thursday, He was one of our
purest and noblest statesmen. He
was born at Lynohburg, Va., No
vember 13, 1813, a descendant of
Joseph Hewee, one of the signers oi
the Declaration of Independence,
When six years of age he accom
panied his parents to Cniilicothe,
Ohio, and was educated at the
aoadomy in that city. He began
life as a surveyor, but studied ittw
in the offico of Gov. William Al-
Ion, and was admitted to the W
in 1S35. In 1844 he was olected a
representative in congress, and
served one term, declining a rc
nemination. In 1851 he was ele
vated to the supreme bench of
Ohio, and for two years was chief
justice of that tribunal. He whs
the Democratic candidate for gov
ernor of Ohio against Rutherford II.
Hayes in 18GG, but was dofeat;l.
He becamo United States senator
March 4, 1869, and was re ulu t. d
in 1874. As senator he formulat. a
what is known as the "Thurman
Act," to compel the execution by
the Paoiflo roads of thoir contracts
with the government, and secured
its passage. At the national Dem
ocrats conventions of 1876, 1SS0,
and 1881 ho was a cindidato for
presidential nomination, and, at
the convention of his party in 1888
was ma'lo the candidate for vice
president. Ho made a vigorous
campaign, but was defeated, and
has since remained at his home in
Columbus, Ohio, where he has re
sided sinuo 1853.

well known in political circles that
a strenuous fight will he made fur
the mastery in the June election
between two republican rings as the
party is split owing to the desire ot
many of its followers to be leaders.
This has resulted in the two fac
tions being formed, one having as
its head Mayor Frank and District
Attorney Hume and the other Jos.
Simon and Harvey Seott. As pos
session is nine points in law and
the Frank-Hume combination are
in office, the probabilities are that
they will stand the best chance oi
being successful in the local cam
paign. Joseph Simon is well known
as a wizard in city politics and
wiseacres doubt not but that he will
manipulate the wires to his own sat
isfaction and that of his constitU'
ents. The combat will involve
every republican politician in Pott-
land as there is not a partisan who
is not in sympathy with either one
or the other rings. With the entire
police and fire departments at his
back, together with several score of
minor office holders the ousting of
Frank would be a deed requiring
infinite diplomaoy and tact, both
ofwhioh qualities are personified
in "Little Joe." In any event, be
the outcome what it may, the cam
paign will be one of the most ex-
oiting ever witnessed in this city
and a veritable monkey and parrot
time may be safely predicted with
out fear of contradiction."
