Bob I n go r soli says the demone
tization of silver in 1873 was a
crime. Mr. Ingersoll is a well
posted lawyer.
A Eugene firm has the sign in
a show window, "Umbrellas
Recovered." If they canrecover all
the umbrellas that are missing
they will do a rushing business.
The son of multi-millionaire
John Mackay was accidently killed
in France the other day. A spirit
ed horso ran away with him through
a forest and his head came in con
tact with a tree. Young Mackay
was a native born citizen of San
Francisco.
The circuit court, has too many
foreclosure suits to be encouraging.
Many are not ablo to pay debts
which were oontrated during an
era of fair prices. The debts in
oroaso while prices decreage. The
people are paying dearly for silver
demonetization which decreased
the availablo stock of the worlds
money one-half. Dear gold, cheap
everything else. Facts.
A ride about the country several
miles around Eugene will convince
one that the fruit industry will
soon become one of groat impor
tance to our people. Young or
ohards have been planted on every
side, some of them already in bear
ing. Most of them have been culti
vated and cared for, but some are
neglcotud and plainly show the re
Bult. The orchardist cannot expect
to be successful without proper
and intelligent cultivation.
The cirouit court of Marion coun
ty did a good job when tho jury
found tho manager of the Albany
Red Crown mills guilty of Btcaling
wheat deposited therein. When
the mill shut down there was
hardly enough grain or millstuff
in it to feed a cow over night yet
there were receipts out for about
20,000 bushels. It is not possible
that the manager was unaware of
tho fact that ho waB grinding and
disposing of wheat that did not
belong to him. A few convictions
in 8uoh coses would deter un
prinoiplod warchouso and mill
men from using wheat which does
not belong to them.
John Sherman has written a
book giving his recollections of
forty years at Washington as a
representative, Bonatorand member
of the cabinet. According to a
tolographio roviow of tho buok the
sotiator airs considerable republi
can dirty linen, and as many pub
lic men who participated in the
events narrated are yet alive, ad
vorae criticism and doninl will
rosult. It reads like tho work of
a petulant old man across whoso
Hfo the Bhndes of a second child
hood are beginning to fall. The
book in the main is laudatory of
Shorman a financial policy. A
large number of our people are
firmly convinced that the ills that
now beset us may be attributed in
part to the Ohio political aristocrat.
He forgets to inform the public
how he became a millionaire ofT a
salary that barely suffices to sup
port public men of any prominence
who onter congress.
The political end of tho Oregon
inn occasionally indulges in dismal
tales as to the injury to our lumber
interests by reason of repeal of a pro-
tectiw tariff. The l.'isiness end
of tho concern, however, which
gives news and facts, tells right
along how Pacific coast mills are
shipping lumber to foreign 1 orts.
Only yesterday it had a report of
ten leading Puget Sound milU
shipping during the month of Sep
tember, in round numbers, 10,000,
000 feet of lumber to foreign parts
against 19,000,000 shipped to
domestic ports. A ten vear old
hoy who cannot see that an indus
try that can send its productions
abroad needs no protection should
be whipped into reason by that Port
land publio school teacher who
raises welts and draws blood. The
only effect a tariff could have in
Buch a case, would be to allow mill
owners to combine so as to rob
domestic purchasers to the extent
of the Bo-called protection.

Doctor Pierce, For a great many years
Dr. R. V. Pierce (chief consulting physician
and specialist to. the Invalids' Hotel and
Surgical Institute, of Buffalo, N. Y.) made
a specialty of the diseases of women, and
from his large experience he was able to
compound a "Prescription" which acted
directly upon the special internal parts of
women. When in doubt as to your ailment
write him, it will cost you nothing. A
Book, on "Woman and Her Diseases'
fiublished by the World's Dispensary Med
cal Association, Buffalo, N. Y-, is of inter
est to all women. It will be sent for ten
cents in stamps.
When women are afflicted with nervous
ness, irritability, nervous prostration or ex
haustion and sleeplessness, in nine cases
out of ten the source of the trouble is some
displacement, irregularity or derangement
of the special internal parts. Dr. Pierce's
Favorite Prescription cures permanently
such cases as well as that distressing in
ternal discharge from the mucous mem
brane, Inflammation and ulceration.
Urookh-n, Jackson Co., Mich.
Gentlemen I am more thnn willing to say your
most valuable medicine has cured me of female
weakness and a catarrhal discharge from the
lining membranes of the special parts, I suf
fered for years with pain iu my back, never a
night was I free. At your request I commenced
treat nent with Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescrip
tion. 1 could not sleep on a mattress ; it seemed
as though It would kill me. Since taking the
medicine I can sleep anywhere; I am perfectly
well. I would not be placed in my former con
dition for any money. Gratefully yours,
