SILVER OS AN EQUALITY WITH
GOLII.
The following letter appears in
tho New York Herald of August 6.
To the editor of the Herald:
Tho law of 1873, making gold the
single standard of value in the
United States, which was followed
by similar laws in other nations,
has caused a two of 100 per cent in
. the commercial valuo of gold and a
corresponding decline in the value
of oil other property, including sil
ver. This rise in gold now tho
standard of valuo has destroyed
about one-half of the value of the'
property of tho civilized world,
causing a loss to the property
owners and producers of untold
hundreds of millions.
Silver was tho measure of value
along with gold at 15 to 1 and 1G
to 1 from 1792 to 1873, a period of
eighty-ono years. The present
national debt, and nearly all state
municipal, railroad and other debts
in the United Slates wero con
tracted undnr tho Bilver Btundard
although many have sinco beon
funded or changed in form, but are
still drawing interest. By chang
ing the standard from silver and
gold to gold alone, a few thousand
mon, who own nearly all the gold
and interest bearing bonds, stocks
and mortgages, havo doubled tho
value of their gold and of thoir
oreditu, which are payable in gold,
and have docreased tho value of tho
property and earnings of their
oreditorB ono-half.
This has made the rich richer
and the poor poorer. The single
standurd gold dollar is not an
"honest dollar," but a dishonest
dollar, invented by tho few to en
rich themselves at tho expense of
the many. To remody this un
happy state of affairs, silver and
gold the money of tho constitution,
should be again placod on an equal
footing t a ratio of 10 to 1, just as
they wore during the first three
quarters of the prosont century.
This would make an unlimited
demand for silver, not as a com
modity, as now, but us money,
which would speedily rcstoro the
oommorcial valuo to tho raoni-y
value, and make tho United States,
now tho greatest silvor-producing
nation, the greatest nation in the
world for woalth and commerce
Tho United States must not wail
for international bimetallism, but
must lead the way to financial us
well as commercial greatness. A
' protective tariff and silver on an
equality with gold will mako tho
United States tho greatest finanoinl
and commercial power in tho
world.

a man may straighten up nud be

but being true don't mako it right.
According to tho Now York Sun
an odd step in tho mevemcut for
booming local industries, which
has lately started up and attained
much headway in tho west, has
been passed at Sioux Falls, S. 1).
An ordinance has been passed
requiring all peddlers and hawkers
who sell goods not manufactured
or produced in the state to pay a
license of $10 a day.
A lamp that burns for six bun
dred hours by having a little sand
in a tumbler or any receptacle, for
tho wires to run through an acci
dental discovery, too! Of what is
net that wonderful thing or
nothing, electricity capable? When
Edison examined the new discovery
he was surprised. Ho thought he
knew something of electricty, but
this rather fetched him. The dis
coverer gave him a handful of sand
but keeps his secret as yet. He
says it is the simplest thing in the
world and happened through the
accidental spilling of an acid over
some sand on which were two
wires crossed. The truth is, we are
but juBton the outer edge of great
discoveries.
