0. C. & E. BA1LR0AD EXTENSION.
Thev following from the Balem
Statesman is a clear and succinct
statement of the importance to a
large portion of the Willamette
valley, as well aB the road, of an
early extension of linos now under
consideration by the Oregon Cen
tral and Eastern railroad:
"The present manager of the Ore
gon Central & Eastern railroad,
Edwin Stone, is a practical West
ern railroad man and understands
probably bolter than moat men in
such positions the actual needs of
the territory he wishes to occupy;
also tho actual returns to a rail
road from the occupancy of such
territory. This fact gives stability
and significance to Mr. Stone's
movements and his recommenda
tions to the oompany. He is
known as one of the most expert
accountants on the Paoifio coast
and figures have no mysteries he
cannot solve, so that the "profit
xnd Iobs" of an enterprise reveals
itself to him without any uncer
tainty. "Mr. Stone haB recommended to
his company three enterprises, to
wit:- the early extension of the line
from its present terminus eastward
to Independance prairie, thus giv
ing easy railroad connection to the
pooplo of Crook county; the early
building of a branch lino from Cor
vallis to Eugene; the building with
similar expedition of a branch from
sorao point in the Cascade foothills
to Salem. A glance at tbe map of
Oregon, bucked by some knowledge
nf nnmrnnrmul influnnnna will nt.
once reveal the importance of the
system when completed in accor
dance with that plan.
"The extension and branohcB com
plete, and boats plying the Wil
lamette river, would at once place
the Oregon Central & Eastern rail
road in a position to compete for
the carrying trado of the wholo val
loy. The immense section of rich
farming country east and south
east of Salom would be tributary to
the Salem-Cascade branch; the
south end of Benton county and a
portion of Lane would be the ex
clusive field of tho Corvullis-Eu-gene
branch, whilo a large portion
of Lane county would patronize it
by choice under present conditions.
The extension to Independence
prairie would naturally divert the
Crook county trade whioh now
passes from The Dallos. These
things takon in connection with
the immense timber interests along
the road in both mountain ranges,
but especially in the Cuscades, the
prosperous mining interest that are
now in process of development in
Eastern Linn and Marion counties
would insure to that road a profita
ble business from the moment roll
ing stock should be set in motion
thereon.
"It is claimed by the frionds of
the Oregon Central i Eastern that
with ocean transportation to San
Franoisco they can onrry froight at
rates that would be ruinous to the
Southern l'acific, hence they could
offer inducements to shippers of
Orcgou products at this end and of
merchandise at tbe other that would
force patronage as a matter of dol
lars and cents.
"It can thus be seen that there is
nothing chimerical in the talk of
these branch lines, but they are
necessities to the better prosperity
of the railroad. While that is the
case, they area still greater necessi
ties to the localities in which they
are to be built. Salem, for instance,
ought to bo alive to the importance
of hustening her branch to the Cas
cades, and so should every farmer
in the territory tributary to it.
There is yet time during 1893 to
build a railroad to Stayton, Melia
rnu or Mill City, because work can
be pushed on such a line during
the entire season. It is probable,
Mr. Huiumond and Mr. Stone
may come to Salem in the near fu
ture to consult its people in regard
to tiiat branch. Tho business men
of Salem ought to be ready to talk
to tliem in accordance with some
plan and with some unanimity of
sentiment. To this end, would it
not be wise to have a meeting,
either under the auspices of the
card of trado or by some other
authority, and have the proper
committees appointed to meet these
gentlemen and ascertain what is
necessary to be done?"
The remarks in tho lust para
graph apply equally well to to Eu
gene, and nearly every portion of
Lane county. At the rates given
by that railroad farmers and busi
ness men from nearly every por
tion of the county could afford to
haul produce and merchandise, to
and from their Btations.
For the past two seasons we have
bad an object lesBon. Large qu en
tities of freight have been hauled
by team from Corvallis to Eugene,
a distance of 40 miles, at a consid
erable saving besides giving team
sters employment. With a branch
line to iuigene business mon of
Cottage Grove, Crcswell, Spring-
held, Uoxter, t'leasant Hill, Uo
burg, and nearly every other trad
ing point in the county, except
those to the north alone the line.
oould make money using teams
hauling to and from the O. C. & E.
line.
