few yards distant from the Big Full
Creek bridge, ivitb ail its contents,
wus entirely destroyed by Are. Squire
Hunnicutt and John Benner, two old
bachelors, lived in the bouse but were
both absent at the time of the fire. It
is supposed the blaze started from a
lighted pipe which Benner bad placed
in Ills vest pocket and left In the bouse
before going to work. The loss is esti
mated ut about $400. There was no
insurance upon tbe uuilding or con
tents. Mr. Hunnicutt is a feeble old
mun who Is Just recovering from a
long and severe Illness, and being thus
left without a home will work a great

Divinity school and to see what en
couragement the citizens will give to
have this school located at Eugene.
The prime mover in this enterprise
is Rev. E. C. Sanderson, of Portland.
He has had experience in nearly every
line of educational and church work
and is a graduate of two of the leading
universities of the east.
While tliis school is to be under the
cojtrolof the Christian church it will
be broader than denominutionui lines
and will adopt tbe latest text books Id
evt-rv department.
As citizens of Eugene wo desire te
make our town the leading educational
center of the Pacific coast. Let us
then make this meeting a grand suc
cess and secure tin location of another
Institution learning for our city.

AN Accident. Cottage Grove
Leader: J T Cardwell met with a
serious accident Thursday afternoon.
While in the hay loft of his barn in
this city, he slipped and fell ten feet.
Having a pitchfork in one hand, and
as be was falling, catching the fingers
of one hand in a crack, made things a
little mixed In the line of misfortune.
He landed on the floor and dislocated
his right shoulder and cam near
pulling the other out of place. Dr
Snapp was called and the case suc
cessfully treated. Mr Cardwell 1b able
to be on deck but feels very much like
an invalid.
