The Guard recently copied an Item
from a Portland paper about how
Studebaker Bros, were about to ship a
thousand bicycles to Portland to be
sold for $25 to $30 a p; ice. An Albany
firm wrote a letter of inquiry to Port
land and received the following letter:
"The report that we intend to man
ufacture or handle bicycles Is a canard.
We have not made enough on our
whcous to indulee in the luxury of a
$25 bicycle, it will probably be some

of inquiries in the last two weeks and

Died at Cubing.
Isaac Smith, a young man aged 87
years, 9 months and 27 days, died of
consumption at the home of his par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Bmith, at
Coburg last night, May 20, 1895, at
10:15 o'clock.
Deceased had been sick for the past
oinliteen months. He was born where
he (lied and had spent most of his life
at Coburg. He had never been mar
ried, and bore an excellent reputation,
being well thought of by all who knew
him.
The funeral services will be conduct
ed from the church In Coburg tomor
row, May 22, at 11 a. m., to the I. O.
O. F. cemetery at that place, Rev. J.
A. Longbottom of this city officiating.

held a lively city election yesterday, at
which 451 votes were cast. The ques
tion agitated was: "Shall or shall not
tho laws heinforced." And itseem8
the voters decided they should not be:
The chief of police and police judge,
who In, ve been in office during the
past two years, and whose candidacy
was vigorously opposed by the local
papers, were both elected. The Amer
ica" Piotectlve Association figured
quite largely, but was successful only
in the election of its candidate for
treasurer. The successful candidates
are: John Kelsay, mayor; E. H. Tay
lor, chief of police; J. M. Porter, police
judge; A. Cauthorn, treasurer; coun
oilmen, first ward, J. M. Davis: second
ward, Charles Blakeslee and J. J.
Flett; third ward, William Crees.

Keunion op Four Sistebs. Port
land Oregonian: Ou Tuesday last a
reunion of tho four daughters of Gen
eral Joseph Lane took place in this
city. Mrs. Mellisa Barlow, one of the
ladies, happened to be in the city on
her way from Spokane to visit her bou
at Gold Hill. It was the anniversary
of her birthday, and also the 42d anni
versary of the arrival of General Laue
iu this state with his five bods and
four daughters. At the residence of
her sister, Mrs. Wihnifred Mosher,
Mrs. Barlow met her two other sisters,
Mrs. Shelby and Mrs. 8. E. Floed.
One of General Lane's sons, Nat, is
dead; the others, Joseph, Simon, John
and Lafayette, are living in Southern
Oregon.

foot race here on May 31st, at the time
the horse races are to take place here.
The race will be 100 yards and, large

Democrat of last Saturday has this
about Mr. Lee Teutsch: "After a
twenty-four hours' sojourn in Baker
City tor a rest, Mr. Lee Teutsch, of Eu
gene, left the Hotel Warshaiier at H:SO
yesterday morning on a bicycle on liiB
irip to Dallas, Texas, expecting to cov
er the entire distance on his wheel."
