A PROFITABLE SETTLEMENT.
I have just heard of two Louis
ville rivals who have disposed of
their quarrel in a profitable way,
says a correspondent of the New
York Herald. At first they deter
mined to fight for the girl. It was
to have been pistols for two and a
lunch for the Burvivor. For a few
days matters looked desperate, but
a woman who can't make up her
mind which of two lovers she pre
fers isn't worth the trouble it takes
to load a gun. Whichever of the
two she married she would proba
bly hunt up the other before the
honeymoon became a waning cres
cent. Now there was a third aspi
iant, a wealthy and gouty old
biped, and he offered the young
sters a goodly sum of money if they
would both retire And give him a
chance. The money was accepted
and divided share and share alike.
It would be folly to waste precious
gunpowder over a bit ef feminine
bric-a-brac as brittle as that. It
wus a good bargain for all except
the old "biped."
Dallas Itemizer, dem.: We con
sider Oregon as very fortunate in
having suoh a ohief executive as
Governor Lord and Hitch a secretary
of state as H. K. Kincaid. They
are in no sense cranks, but are in
every sense tlio friends of the peo
ple ut largo. With them the mat
tor of popularity or the reverse cuts
no figure, it being simply a ques
tion of duty to thsse they were
choson to serve. If we were a bit
ter democratic partisan, we should
leave it to editors of their own faith
to praise them, but we hope to
always be found with enough man
hood to approve what is worthy
and condemn what is unworthy
wherever found.
ABtoria Budget: Ex-Sheriff
Smith, was in office about
seven years. The office was worth
not less than $16,000 per year
$ 1 12,000 for the whole time. When
he married his last wife she was
worth about $17,000; now she is
hopelessly involved. It is reason
able to eittimato that he is in debt
about $12,000. That makes $141,-
000 ho linB squandered in the time
mentioned, and his wife accepted a
situation in a dress making shop
today at a salary, of 75 cents por
day; his dnughter is coin polled to
' work in the can factory for $3.50
por weok. He loft tlieiu without a
nickel.
Bradstreet's roports show a big
increase in clearances, take the
whole U. S. for one week, over the
corresponding yio of last yoar. It
is to be noticed though that the in
crease has not yet struck this coast,
which rathor shows a decrease,
that of Portland boing 21 por cent,
Seattle 21.8 per cent, San Francisco
1.1 per cent. The largest increase
is that of New York, over 50 per
cent. Spokane shows an increase
of 22 per cent, and Tacoma of 20.
The justices of the U. S. supreme
court who voted against the income
tax law were, Chief Justice Fuller
and Justices Gray, Field, Brewer
and Shiran. For the law were Jus
tices Harlan, White, Brown and
Jackson.
Wl-eat is steady and advancing
in the markets of llio world. It is
good nows to pnwm who havo
beon selling n iv very narrow
margin or at a lues.
Dealers report an advance in
quotations of wholesale rates in a
numbor ot commodities.
A Portland paper has this: Cer
tificates of deposit on the Portland
Savings bank are being hawked
around the street and offered for
sale for twenty-five cents on the
dollar. The poor depositors in
that institution are certainly de
serving of universal sympathy.
The Times says the vitality is
oozing out of the Corvallis street
railroad. The actual cost was $11,-
000. Miles Wilkns traded real
property and $2,250 cash for it.
At one time the receipts were as
high as $100; but now they have
been flickering until they amount
to only about $10 a month. A
Portland company now owns the
road, having taken it on a debt.
As a license of $10 a year has been
imposed it will have to stop run
ning and the rails will no doubt be
sold for old iron.
Medford Mail: R. N. Barker, of
Cottage Grove, was here lost week
talking up a possible deal witn W. W.
Taylor for the purchase of a half Inter
est in Mr. Taylor's saw mill, which is
now over in the J en ay creek country,
but which is proposed to be put at
work on a f;00 acre tract of Umber laud
which belongs to the Taylor boys, and
which Is located not a great distauoe
east of Medford. Mr. Barker Is an old
time acquaintance of O. P. Liudley.

Dr. R. V. Pierce (chief consulting physician

a specialty of the diseases of women, and
from his large experience he was able to

directly upon the special internal parts of
women, when in doubt as to your ailment
write him, it will cost you nothing. A
Book, on "Woman and Her Diseases."
published by the World's Dispensary Med

When women are afflicted with nervous
ness, irritability, nervous prostration or ex

out of ten the source of the trouble is some
displacement, irregularity or derangement
of the special internal parts. -Dr. Pierce's
Favorite Prescription cures permanently
such cases as well as that distressing in

brane, inflammation and ulceration.
