A Surprise. Last evening at her
home ou East Ninth street, Miss Belle
Haines was pleasautly surprised by a
number of her young friends, wha
came in upon her unannounced for the
purpose of spending the evening and
having a good time. As soon us Miss
Haines had sufficiently recovered from
her surprise she set about entertaining
her guests in. a way that proved both
enjoyable and profitable. At a late
hour all went homo feeling that the
evening had not been spent in vuin.
Farm House Burned. -The farm
house on the old Pitney pluce, three
miles west of Junction City, wus de
stroyed by lire yesterday ufternoou.
It was occupied by Johnny Williams
und fumlly, and it burned so rapidly
they were unable to save any of their
household eilects, the wind beiug quite
high. Our informant did not learn
how the fire caught, whether it was
insured or nit, or the probuble loss.
The Time Expired. The ten days
having expired in which donors to the
Nebraska sufferers' fund could receive
back their goods, the committee will
now proceed to distribute tho same
the major portion ol the supplies being
turned over to tho Wouiens Relief
Corps. It is but just to say that, very
few persons culled to receive buck their
donations. ' ,
Rim Broken. Mr. Tallufers, who
lives near Nutron, was at Douglas &
Levinger's dairy farm east of Spring
field a few days ago in a cart when his
horse became frighteued and unman
ageable und run away, throwing him
out and breaking three ribs. . The
horse broke loose from the cart but no
other serious damage was done.

this basis. Tho basis is. wrong. It

told: when the population of Oregon

showed about 100,000.

Will Make Cheese. Owing to
the prevailing low price of butter this
seasuu Douglus & Levinger, of the
dairy farm above Springfield, have de
cided to quit making that product dur
ing tho summer mouths and will man

paratus necessary and an experienced
cheese-maker, und expect to commence
making cheese about the middle of
April. They bclievo that during the
summer aionths while the price of
butter is so low, cheese will pay best.
They expect to market their product
whenever the demand Is greatest.
