'I ain't," ohsorvod Burclar Joov Brown as, wheezing and gasping, ho Htruggled through Lord Hoathington's soullory window, "I ain't us narror as I used to . bo whon I fust ontored tlio purfossion, not by a long chalks. I'm pnttin on flush, that's wot I'm doiu. and it's timo I loft off buralin and took a pub. Lawd, but that's mado me sortor sultry I" Burglar Joey Brown took a larco rud hniidkorohicf from ono of his suspi ciously capacious pookots and wiped his face with onorgy. Ho was an old hand at tho gamo, was Joey. Truo, ho had beon "quoddod" onoo or twice, but what of that? Evory burglar whoso Boul is in Ins work muBt oxpect to bo 'quod dod" occasionally during his caroor. Bosidos theso doses of "penal" afford timo for reflection and rest. Joey had mado his way cautiously from tho mows whioh lay at tho back of Lord Hoathington's town rosidouco, and when ho had roached tho small court yard which soparatod the stables from tho main building tho rost had boon oasy, and hore ho was in the soullory. Jooy rubbed his faco until it shone like a copper kettlo and then returned tho handerkchiof to his pocket. "If this 'ere oxploit, "said Mr. Brown, addressing tho tubs and bowls around him, "turns up trumps and brings in tho dibs, well" with a satisfied ohuoklo "Joo Brown nnd burgliu will part company. Joo Brown is got tiu too fat for this kind er work. And now, as Macboth observos in tho play, 'Lot us away,' and inspect 'is lordship's vnlyooblos. " Jooy, whoso boots, it is hardly neoos sary to explain, had beuu loft in a shady cornor of the mows, made his way noiselessly out of tho scullery into tho kitchen and thence into tho corridor. "Thoso footmon, " said Jooy, who seemed to bo perfectly acquainted with his wheroabouts, "suoro like 'ogs. I might do a 'orupipo in boots 'ore and never be 'eard with that hawful row goin on. " After looking in on the sluinboring footmau for a moment Mr. Brown pro ceeded on his way and ascended to tho first floor. "Thoy'vo sovcral littlo articles in tho drorin room wot I want to inspeot, " ho murmured, "aftor which we will pay our custom'ry wisit to the plato olosot. " Jooy mado his way quietly into tho drawing room, but beforo annexing anything of valuo ho deposited himself upon a divan and grow poetical. ' 'Just to think, ' ' ho murmured, ' 'on'y this one crib, and then I've donu with tho purfession forever. Littlo pub in tho country shady meddors cows and sheep baain now laid eggs and milk thoro will Joo Brown spend tho hnutunm of his days tho evenin of a useful ca roor. 'J3 will go to church, bo a church; warding. ' ' Hero Jooy gave vout to a most unctuous ohuckle. "Just fancy, Jooy 'andiu tho bag I Oh, wot delights aro in Btoro for Joo Brown when o re tires from business! It won't be long afore thoro's a Mrs. Josoph eithor. Wot, oh, wot is homo without a mothor? And now, Joe, you must gag a bit and get to work on thoso oro golden" Creak! Joe sat up with a start, and then, with wonderful alacrity for a man of his bulk, loft his soat and slid behind a soreon which stood near him. Creak ! "Somebody on tho move," Baid Joe softly. "Thoro's a door goin. " Ho lis tened intently, and his quick ears soon detected tho sound of footsteps crossing tho hall. Arrivod at tho foot of the stalroase, the person, whoever it was, began to ascend, upon which tho bur glar left his place of concoalment, crawl ed to the door and peeped out. " 'Is lawdship!" Joo quiokly got book to his soroen and dooidod to give the master of the house a good half hour in whioh to get to bed and to sleep. ' 'That was a narrer shave," he soliloquized. "Supposin I 'adn't 'eard 'im and 'o'd come plump in 'ero and found mo restin on 'is sofayl W'y, it 'ud 'avo meant goodby to the pub and 'ow oro yer?' to the Scrubbs or Portland. This ought to toaoh you, Joey, that, like other wooa tions, burglin is never entirely learnt. Now, suppose we" Creak! "Some one else abahtl" was Jooy's olassio utterance as he once more orawl ed to the door and peeped out. Thoro was some one else about. As Joey peeped out a tall, dark man in evening dross issued from the room fao ing that whioh was honored with Mr. Brown's presenoe nnd stood for a mo ment examining something whioh glis tened in the moonlight, for, contrary to Joey's expectations, the moon hud dis engaged herself from tho clouds whioh had previously enveloped her and was now shedding her soft light on the world beneath nor. Whatever the thing was that he was examining tho man put it quiokly into the inside pocket of his dress coat and then made his way to tho staircase. As the ray whioh oame through tho fan light over the door fell on his faco Joey saw that it was oonvulsed with rage nnd evory evil passion. His tooth were olinohed, and his dark eyos gleamed with fury. At tho foot of the staircase he paused. "He refusosl" he hissed. "My own brother refuses mo this favor a trifle to him, all the world to me. Very well. " He stopped speaking nnd seem ed to wrestle with his better self for a moment. Then, with nn oath, he began to ascend the stairs. "Well," said Joey to himself no he rubbed his oyos, '. 'this 'ore's a rum go. Fust 'is lawdship goes to bed at 1 o'olock of tho moruiu, when I know fur oortin 'avlu 'ad it from the second footman 'imself over a glass of boor 'is usual hour is H at night, and then, oloso on his hools, comes 'is lawdship's brover a-swoarin and oussin dreadful to 'oar and lookin at summat wot shinos. Joey, my lad, we'll seo this hout. " So saying, Mr. Brown crept softly up (fairs, stopping at intervals to liston And make sure that he was unperceived. Ho roached tho first floor and paused as if uncortaiu whithor to direot his BtepH. f "Let's seo," he said, " 'is Inwd- chip's bedroom looks on to the street, und yours I romombor now that tho powdered hairod covo iksplainod 'or ladyship is out 'er town. Very woll, then. Tho mewses is to my back, so tho front of tho 'ouso must be oforo me. Ah, thoy'roa-talkin, and I s'pose thoy'vo got this part of tho 'ouso all to their selvcs, sinco thoro ain't no children or guests. " Tho tulkiiig was evidently going on in a bedroom which opened into n cor ridor that lay on Mr. Brown's right hand, and so, with the utmost caution, tho burglar cropt Boftly down tho pas sugo until ho roached a door that was partly ajar. A littlo investigation serv ed to show Mr. Brown that tho cham ber to which tho door belonged waB a dressing room, and that, furthermore, tlw dressing room opened into tho bed room in whioh the conversation was taking place. Very stealthily the houso breaker ontored and crawled to the bed room door. Arrivod there, ho experi enced no difficulty in hearing every word that was spoken. "I refuse omphatically, " Lord Heathington was exclaiming, "and I'll trouble you to leave this room at once. " Not until I got what I want," an swered the other in an insolent tone. "You shall never have another fur thing from mo, " said tho peer. "You havo run through all your own inouoy and a considerable portion of mino, and I won'o Btaud your blackmailing any longer. Now, you can loavo this room and my house as soon as you like. ' ' The youngor man uttered a florco im precation. "If you won't give mo what I want," ho shouted, "I'll find n way of making yon." "As you see fit to descend to vulgar throats," returned Lord Heathington quietly, "I shall have to have you put out of tho houso. " So saying, ho advanced toward the bellropo and was about to pull it when his brother sprang forward, and boing by far tho more powerful of tho two knocked him down with ono blow of his fist. Then, as Lord Heathington at tempted to rise, his relative dropped on to his knees and held him down by the throat. "Holp! Holpl Murder!" exclaimed tho prostrate man in half stifled touos. Jooy, looking through tho door, saw tho youngor man put his hand inside his coat and draw a shining object from his pookot the samo object that ho had examined so intently in the hall. Joey was not an individual possessed of much virtue, but he was an English man, and in common with his country men was always inclined to side with tho weaker party when any struggle was going on. Ho knew that any in terference on hiB part would load to his deteotiou and subsequent arrest, but he did not allow that thought to deter him from tho course of aotion which he re solved to take. He saw the uplifted weapon. Ho heard Lord Hoathington's ory of "Murder!" and ho could see the diabolical look on the face of tho other man. Joey took in the situation in a moment. The events of a few seconds take some minutes to desoribo, and It must bo romembored that the oocur ronce we are describing was of less than a minute's duration from first to last. It was a large room, and between tho door and the struggling oouplo was a hugo four poster. Joey, on seeing tho, uplifted woapon, snatohed a pillow from the bed and threw it with all his force at tho would be murderer's head. Thon he sprang across the bed nnd grappled with him ero he had time to take his brother's life. With an exolamation of baffled re venge Lord Heathington'B brother turned on the burglar and buriod his dagger for the weapon was a poinard of Italian make, whioh usually hung on tho wall of Lord Hoathington's study in Joey's side. Simultaneously tho bur glar dealt him a tromendous blow on his head with n jimmy, and when the frightened domestics, aroused by their master's frantio tugs at the bellropo, arrived on tho scene they found house breaker and peer's brother lying sido by side, the first dying, the second only unoonsoious. An hour later Joey recovers con sciousness, thankB to tho efforts of tho doctors who were hastily called in. Lord Hoathington's brother, dangerously but not mortally hurt, lies in his own room. Joey himself rests on his lordship's bed. His life is fast ebbing away, for the physioians say that they oannot save it. T.nrd Hnnthincton. eternally gratoful to the man who has saved his life, sits by tho bedsido, anxiously watching the sufferorls face.
