A DEI lllTIwFD LETTERS Mfke Soboseo. the man arrested recently at Natron for breaking Into a commissary car used by the Utah Construction company. given a sentence of one year in the peniten tiary today by Judge Harris, of the circuit court, after he had entered a plea of guilty and waived time for pronouncing sentence- The crime with which he is charged is larceny in a building W H Seymour, who was arrested some time ago on the charge of ob taining money under false pretenses, also entered a plea of guilty today ■nd was sentenced to the peniten tiary for two years, but paroled upon promise of good behavior. Judge Harris, upon sentencing him. stated that if he uses intoxicating liquors or commits any crime during that time he will be sent to prison and will have to serve the full sentence. He faithfully promised to keep the law and support his wife and family. He was accused of passing a worth less check on the First National bank of Eugene at the Renshaw cigar store. Anderson. FIRST HAREM SKIRT IM PORTLAND DRAWS LARGE STREET CROWD The fi'st harem skirt was seen on Portland streets at noon today when Gertrude Duntap. an actress, appear ed on Washington street. She creat ed such a stir that two policemen. Webster and Ellis, were sent out by Captain Baty to protect her from the very much amused crowd that fol lowed In her wake i down Washington street from Sixth to Third streets and back again. "Oh. you harem skirt;” "Pipe de pants.'* and many similar remarks were made by those in the crowd. The gown was made of a brilliant yellow silk with huge black dots scat tered around A long brilliant green sash did duty as a belt and the waist was a creation worthy of the highest praise of the needlecraft. Miss Dunlap smiled at every rc- mark. Women who saw her pass turned up their noses In indigmtion and heaped all kinds of sarcasm on the woman and on the police de- partment for allowing "such a fright ful thing as that on the streets " But Miss Dunlap created more stir than she wanted to create. Although she had nerved herself to venture on the street she could not be Induced to take off the long overcoat that hung to her feet. A plain pair of button shoes and a large black pic ture hat with a large white veil com pleted her costume. The last block of the trip was made on the run.
