VOLUME 44 TW10E-A-WEEK G EUGENE, OREGON, THURSDAY EVENING, JANUARY 4, 1911 I E Spokane, Jan. 4.—Rushing through the Northern Pacific yards at Cheney this morning the North Coast Limited, No. 2, struck the rear cars of the Burlington passenger, No. 42. Three coaches were wrecked and at least five persons were killed, as follows: Walter J. Starr, of Seattle, express messenger of the North Coast Limitted; G. L. Warren, superintendent of the Spo kane Orphan's Home, residence near Davenport, Wash.; Oliver Porter, of Chicago; W. Mason, a porter on the rear Pullman of No. 42, east bound; one unidentified man. One porter, name not ascertained, was fatally injured. Several are reported miss ing, among them O. E. Brown, of Omaha, Neb., and search of the wreckage continues. The Burlington train was taking a siding to let the limited pass. Before the last cars could clear the main track, the fast train crashed into the rear coaches. A relief train with physicians and nurses was rushed from Spokane to the scene. The Burlington train arrived at Cheney in plenty of time to make the siding. An unexplained delay of five minutes saw the Burlington train still on the main line, with the. North Coast train coming at a terrific speed down a mile of | straight track, approaching the yards. The engineer of the North Coast train applied the air brakes, but could not stop his train. That the death list is no larger is due to the fact that ¡ there were only six persons in the two rear Pullmans of the Bur- ¡ lington train. A score of trainmen and passengers were more or less in jured. Later the body of O, E. Brown was found in the wreckage.
