■» VOLUME 44 TW ICE-A-W EEK G U ARD EUGENE, OREGON, THURSDA Y EVENING, DEC. 29, 1910. General William Booth, Veteran Leader Of Salvation Army, to Undergo Operation TWENTY WORKMEN 5.000.000 TOBE BURIED IR PII DAILYCAPACirYOF Jl El PASO BUECH PLANT i Explosion of Quantity of Dyna Proposition of Springfield Mar mite Creates Great Havoc Will Be Taken Up By Near El Paso Club That the Southern Pacific main line will never leave Eugene after the Natron extension is completed, as many have antici pated, fearing that a cut-off would be built between Springfield and Albany or Hainsburg, making a straight cut to Portland on the east side, is the declaration of H. A. Brandoe construction engineer of the Southern Pacific company, who, with assistant surveyors, is prepari-ig to rebuild the pc-tion of the line that lies between Nation and Springfield Junction, with the same heavy ioadbed that characterizes the new Natron extension. A new and heavier bridge wil* place the steel structure across .he rizer at Springfield, and possibly a heavier bridge will be put in at Harrisburg. In speaking of the matter today, Mr. Brandon said: “It may be that the terminal and yardage facilities will be located at Spring field, but the Natron extension will join the main line at Springfield Junction and certainly pass through Eugene, which is already too big a city to be overlooked by a railroad.” The short distance of track between Natron and Springfield will be torn up and replaced with heavier rails, and the roadbed will be widened and heavily ballasted. I - ’«z- i El Paso, Dee. 28.—While railtoad workmen were blasting slag at th»* E Paso smelter today for railroad bal lasting, dynamite stood in a pit. where a score of men were at work, exploded. Nearly all the melt are believed to be buried, but the work of excavating by the res- cers is slow, Only four nten were accounted for at noon today.
