"°'>dw.ir,|t ( inrke Ä Co., l’ortland * * » i Bethany, Aviation Field, RheimB,, Aug. 2 7.—The aviation program for today included the finals in the Grand Prix de La Champagne, the competition being for the greatest distance covered without taking on fre h supplies of oil and fuel, which carries the largest prize of the meeting. The record is now 95.88 miles, made by Latham yesterday. In an effort to recover thi prize, which was wrested from him yesterday, Paulham went up at 11 o’clock with gasoline enough to last five hours, but alighted after going a ccuple of miles because his oil feeder did not work properly. In making a second start Paulham had an accident which crumpled up his left plane, but he said he expected to make an other start later in the day. Shortly after this mishap Blériot went up and rounded the course four times. His time was slow, however. Three Wright models, each equipped with a tank carrying ninety litres of gasoline, will fly this afternoon. Count De Lambert, who flew a Wright model last night, said he could have continued for 200 kilometers—124.2 miles — had it not been that his tank became empty. FARMAN MAKES NEW RECORD Flying in a biplane here today, Henry Farman beat Louis Paulham a record for distance by 3.7 miles, thus winning second place in the Grand Prix de la Champagne. First place is still held by Latham with 95.88 miles. Paulham s mechan ics worked furiously until half-past three trying to get his aer oplane repaired, but when it was seen they could not get it ready Paulham filed a protest with the committee, claiming that he had been fouled by De LaGrange, and requesting a postponement of the finals in the Grand Prixe de la Cham pagne. It w»3 almost dark when Farman completed the 18th lap, giving him a total distance of 180 kilometers—111.78 miles— and searchlights located on the top of the tribunes are sweep ing the plain and aiding the daring aviator in his flight. Far man stopped at the conclusion of the 19th round, giving him a distance of 190 kilometers, or 118.06 miles. The committee stopped recording Farman’s round at 7:30. He had then cov ered 180 kilometers in 3 hours, 4 minutes and 5 2-5 seconds. Al LAST MOMENT.
