Camps Bombarded Clearly A good many people in Eugene and vicinity know Ed Menroe, and his brother •'Bill," who have figured conspicuously several times in the lo cal police court. A report has reach ed Cottage Grove that Ed was shot and killed at Spokane a few days ago. The Leader says: Late Monday evening a telegram was received by the little daughter of Ed Munroe, who is making her home with Mrs. Gilkinson in this city, that her father had been shot by John Ryan at Spokane, where both me» went from this city a short time ago. It seems that Monroe had been pay ing considerable attention to Mrs. Ry an for some time past, and had been threatened by Ryan before leaving this city, but Monroe gave little heed to the threats and followed Mrs. Ryan and two children to Spokane, where. I it is supposed, he persisted in his suit I for Mrs. Ryan's favor, which result- ; cd in the tragedy. Particulars, how. i ever, are unobtainable at this time. I White Plains. N Y., July 28.— Harry Thaw underwent a gruelling examination at the bands of District Attorney Jerome today and in the test to prove he is sape Thaw made a good shewing. He answered the questions readily, and apparently readily comprehended every query put to him. He was unruffled throughout and left the stand at the noon recess in a happy frame of mind. JIM JEFFRIES POSTS FORFEIT FOR 4 JOHNSON FIGHT Thaw Was a Fiend White Plains. July 27.—Harry K. Thaw sat in the supreme court room today and heard a woman's testimony that made his pallid face flush. He saw a pearl-handled dog whip exhib ited and he heard a witness swear she had seen him wield it on the bare flesh of girls. The witness was Mrs. FX«an Mer rill, a buxom woman of about 35 years, and she opened a new chapter I in Thaw's life. She told of alleged acts of Thaw between 1902 and 1905. when he was a bachelor about New York. Her testimony was in marked contrast with that of the two alien ists. who gave Thaw a clean bill of health, declaring his opinion that he is sane. She testified that during the three years named she kept in succession two New York lodging houses, where Thaw rented rooms tinder assumed names, and to which he brought at i ♦ New York, July 28.—Jas. ♦ ♦ ♦ J.
