Portland, April 3.—The Columbia and Willamette river lumber manu facturers and loggers are considera bly wrought up over the report that has appeared in a number of newspa pers on the Pacific coast slitting that the bottom had dropped out of the lumber market in the Northwest. Prominent men ill the lumber busi ness state absolutely that there was no reason for the publication of such a report; that there was no reason for loggers to reduce prices on the present output of the logging camps, and that there being no surplus and witli tiie cost of labor and stumpage advancing, a reduction at this time is out of the question. What will happen if the tariff on lumber is greatly reduced is problematical, but some timbermen maintain that unless :he tariff is maintained it will result in a reduction in both the cost of stumpage and the cost of labor.
