Flushing, N. Y., Dec. 28.- -The
Marital troubles of Captain Peter C.
Hains Jr., and his story of estrange­
ment with his wife, Claudia Hains,
came out in the trial of Thornton
J Hains today, when Samuel C.
Reid, a government building inspec­
tor at North Chicago, related conver­
sations he had last June with Cap­
tain Hains, making known the causes
that led to the separation of the cap
tain and his wife
The testimony of
what Captain Hains said was permit­
ted by Justice Crane as having a bear­
ing on the mental condition of ’he

Mr Reid stated that C iptain Hains
told him that his wife had-conf’ ssed
that she lived Annis. Captain Hains
evinced signs of great mental dis­
tress tn the narration of his troubles,

Oakland, Dec. 26.— -The collision
of an automobile and train in the
heart of the business district today
was preceded by the running down
of two pedestrians by the same ma­
chine. Ona person was perhaps fa­
tally injured and three others are
more or less badly hurt.
The Injured are: Sam Knlla, chauf­
feur, j>erhaps fatally; John Petty and
Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Riley.
The machine was dashing down
Broadway at a furious speed carry­
ing to the hospital Albert Cross, who
had just been Injured by a trolly car.
Petty was also an occupant of the
automobile. Just before the machine
struck the train It ran down and
struck Rileys, who was crossing the
street. At Seventh and Broadway the
machine collided with a local train,
