Washington, Dec 19.—Explaining his bill for increasing the
salaries of the president and vice president, Senator Bourne, of
Oregon, today said that aside from all sentiment in the matter,
he was of the opinion that if a man was big enough to be presi
dent of the United States, the biggest corporation in the world,
he certainly was as big in the business of government as the
president of a railroad or manufacturing enterprise, and should
be paid, as a business proposition, what the demands of the po- I
sition indicate as a fair compensation.
The president s salary has never borne any relatively ade ♦

the position, which are annually increasing.
Senator Bourne called attention to the fact that the presi OREGON ELECTRIC

executive expenditures.
Th Bourne bill proposes for the president a salary of
$100,000, and the vice president $25,000.
