There are 90 members, making 4 6 votes necessary for a i choice. Prohibition carried in many coun ties which were already “dry," and In which the questions were re-sub mitted. The prohibitionists gained a number of cbuntles which had been partially ’’wet.” Equal suffrag» has lost again. In Portland Judge O’Day Is beaten for re-election, as Is District Attor ney John Manning (Dem.) by Police Judge Comeron l Rep ). Sheriff Stevens defeats ex-Sheriff Tom Word by 5000 majority. Portland, June 2.—Prohibition has made a surprising showing over the state, winning In almost every in- stance, particularly tn th“ lesser pop ulated counties. In Clackamas, where the closest fight of the series is be ing enacted, the drys led most of the morning, while just before noon the wets gained a lead of ab 'tit 50 votes with 30 precincts of the vote to hear from. Reports from the following counties show that they have carried as a whole for prohibition. Polk, Mal heur, Josephine. D'Uigla'». Columbia. Wheeler. Yamhill. Tillani ok. Colum bia, Lane. Linn, Morrow. Union and Crook, with probably Lincoln and probably Clackamas Marion county remains wet by a substantial major ity. LOOKS LIKE A JOKE TO EASTERN PEOPLE Since Eastern people have com menced to flock to this country in large numbers the county treasurer has had his hands full of trouble. Of oourse most of these people who . are coming buy home» or Invest in lands, and naturally have to pay taxes. Nearly all of them come from states where the taxes are paid to the county treasurer direct and this is the office they flock to as a matter of habit. It’s a curious bland smile i that spreads over the honest faces I of these people from the East when I they pre politely informed tliiit they will have to go to the . herlff to set tle that difference They don’t see the joke. He ia the fellow above all county officers that they seek to avoid and when they fully understand after considerable Insistence on the part of the treasurer that the sher- iff first handles the tax money they reluctantly leave for t|ic new inno vation. As there are more Eastern people coming to this country now rhan »■ver before, this article may serve as a gentle reminder of what to ex pect when tax time comes around.
