Many of the larger sawmill« of
California are now employing ’ hand”
aawa instead of circular «awn. Hand
aawa are proving especially advan
tageous lit the Rawing of big log», a«
they do the work more quickly utirt
with fnr lean wuto than the circular
naw«. These baud aawa are long rib
bon» of steel, from h I k to eight Inch
es In width, operate over largo pul
leys above and below, the upper pul
ley being located directly over the
lower. The principle on which these
saws operate I h exactly like that of
the small band saw» employed In
planing and finishing mills. The
saws are necessarily thin, and made
of the very toughest steel. Each ha»
a dally capacity of from 30,000 to
40,000 feet, and requires from 25 to
40 per cent less power than circular
saws of the same capacity. To pre
vent heating a small stream of water
is continually played upon the band
saw. At first there wuk considerable
hesitancy In adopting them, as they
were considered extremely dangerous
on account of their liability to break.
It han been found, however, that
there Is no more danger of their
breaking than that of the circular
saw
I’nltke the circular saw, th •
band saw carries 1ti own te th. there
being a part of the saw Itself. Each
mil] must therefor* be provided with
several extras, so that these may be
In the process of sharpening and set
ting while the other is at work.
