Every citizen of the county aud valley knows him as an upright and lilieral business man. In all these years he has never had trou ble with the city authorities except once, about 26 years ago, when a mi nor got a drink of beer at his place on a Fourth of July, aud even that was not his fault. At a meeting of the Y. M. C. A. board of directors last night various matters were discussed. It was found that the probable cost of a suitable building will be 815,600, and with the 4 ound aud equipment the entire cost will be 826,660. RIDGWAY DEFOE SHERK GIRL WILL MURDERED NOT TESTIFY AT SEATTLE John Ford, of Florence, who was brought to Eugene last night by Dep uty Sheriff C. C. Hamtr.und, having been arrested upon the charge of stat utory rape, was taken before Judge Wintermeier, of the justice court this forenoon aud arraigned. He de manded an examination, which was set for this afternoon at 2 o’clock. At that hour Ford and Stella Ridgway, the 16-year-old girl who was to have beeu the prosecuting witness, were brought into court, but the girl re fused to testify against the man and he was discharged on that count, but he and the girl were immedatiely ar rested upon the charge of lewd co habitation. Their examination will be held next Thursay, the postpone ment being made in order to secure a number of witnesses from Florence. L. Word was received in Eugene last uignt that Detoe Sherk, a graduate of the University of Oregon with the class of 1066, had committed suicide by shooting himself in the head while in his room at a Seattle hotel yester day. A telegram from Dr. C. C. Me- Cornack at Portland to the Sigma Nu farternity, of which Sherk was a popular memlier, gave the informtalon that it was not suicide, but murder. No other information was contained in the telegram further than that C. N. .Pat McArthur had left for Seat tle to help investigate the affair. It is not known here why the young man was murdered nor is it known that he ever had any enemies. His many friends are awaiting particulars of the awful deed with feverish an xiety. The news of his reported sui cide came as a thunderbolt out of a clear sky, byt the later news that it was murder was simply appalling. Young Sherk's home was at Hunt ington, Or. At the time of his death he was in the employ of the Omar Mining Co. in Alaska, and was on his way from Ketchican to Portland to i-rs.rt at headquarters. The body has been taken to Portland for interment. The young man was aiiout 2-4 years old and was one of the most (aipular students that ever attended the uni versity. r CITY WATER RESPONSIBLE FOR TYPHOID EPIDEMIC Tlie typhoid fever epidemic in Eu gene is becoming more serious every .lay and there teens no d< ubt tint the source of the alarming situa tion is the city water works. In the investigation of the cause of the malady now affecting Eugene the Guard is able to give an in stance that is nearly conclusive in its scope. On Pearl street, between Elev enth aud Sixteenth streets, every family using city water is afflicted with typhoid fever, while those in the same bound* who are using well water are entirely free from the disease. At the present time there are nearly 90 case* of the fever in the city, several deaths have occurred aud the disease is spreading daily. Doctors are overworked, nurses are unobtainable aud of the 90 cases nearly all used city water. g Yesjerday a hydrant that bad not been opened for months was Hushed and green, foul-smelling water issued forth. This hydrant was on a dead end main, and these dead ends are held responsible for a great amount of the sickness. FEVER IS LOCAL. The present scourge is local and is not general over the county, as reported. Investigation »hows that n. arty all ti e Lane county ca.,e*. of which there are few outside of Eu gene, are traceable to this city. The citizen* should clean up; the city council should see that all unsanitary places should la« chained, ami that all toilets tributary to sewers should be connected up. It is re- porte.1 that filthy cesspools are in ex istence in the very centre of the city and the council should attend to these at once. WATER SUPPLY. One of Eugene's best physicians tells the Guard that as long as the water supply is obtained from the pre.-ent vicinity we will be affected with typhoid, and while tilteration will help it will not entirely remove these germs. Eugene a physicians haye united in a demaud for boiled water.
