Chicago, Jan. 11. —At tbe lroqouis inquest today the evidence was simi lar to that given before; one witness testified that she appealed to the usher to assist her to escape but he threw her oif. Fifteen members of ti Bluebeard Company, who have been ! id under urreHt by the corouer, were released, their testimony having been taken. A not be c hospital death was reported this morning, and this brings the list of tbe dead up to 570. Several others are in a critical condition. Leaders iu tlie old Populist party have been conferring, and it bus beeu decided that circular letters shall be sent out for the purpose of securing expression of opinmus upon tbe subject. It is proposed to hold a .mass meeting of Populists in Port land, the latter part of this muntu, when reorngnizatiou will be effected aud delegates will be choseu to repre sent tbe party at tbe National l’o| u- iist Convention at St. Louis in Feb ruary. “The time is ripe tor reorganiza tion, ’’ declares a foimer mem tier of tlie state executive committee of the People’s party. “A great many people think tbe Populist uiovemeut is dead, but it isn’t. Most men who believed iu the principles of the People’s party ten years ago believe in them still. Three years ago the managers of the party in this state met and declared that dissolution of tbe party bad taken place, but this Hetion was without the knowledge or consent of tbe rank and file of the Populist party. The members of that party can and will reorganize, ami we will be beard from in tbe campaign next Spring.’’ The men who are takiug the lead in tlie work of putting new life into the People's party in Oregon believe that the former position of that party can be regaiued in one campaign. They cite the fact that in 1894 the Populist party was second iu strength in this state. When Lord was elected governor in that year, Pierce, (Peo.) led Galloway, (Dem.) by a vote of 26,(W or 17,000. While tbe Populists do not expect iu ouo campaign Ao se cure their former numerical strength, t hey do expect to take rank us the second party of the state. They say that a large number of Populists have refuted to affiliate with any other patty. Many have became Socialists, united witli the Democrats and some found their way into tbe Republican party, on tbe strength of the pros perity argument. The leaders iu tbe reorganization movement believe they can regain ull ttie strentb that weut to these parties, and if bard times ensue, as now seems to them probable, they hope to gain further at length by means of co verts bom the luuks of the old parties. “Anti-fusion will be one of tbe first principles of the reorgHiiiisd People’s party,” is tbe statement made by one cl the men who is no- tively engaged in gathering the scat tered forces of the once formidable political organization.
