Immoral Advertising.
The Albany Democrat says:
It was made so tropical, for the
Quaker doctors iu Pendleton that they
lit out ami went to Portland. Every
community should be made too warm
for them.
Yet, i'i tbe same column that tbe
above is published is a six-inch ad
vert ieemeut of the most objection-
able character, that should not be
permitted to enter the columna of
any newspaper.
The worst feature of thia matter is
that the doctor who thus advertises
travels from town to town, publish
ing his objectionable matter that
should not allowed be in any home.
This outfit was in Eugene recently and
asked special rates from ti e Eugene
papers.
He was promptly notified
that be would have to pay tbe same
rate as our local advertisers, with tbe
further provison that tbe objection
able features of the matter sought to
be published should be expunged.
This was truly a wonder that we
could ask such a thing, when the
papers in Albany, Salem and other
valley towns were doing it and for
low rates, why not Eugene!
While the Guard would accept out
side advertisements, at local rates, we
would not be guilty of allowing
such objectionable matter as that
now running in the Democrat at
any price. Other valley papers, we
are sorry to say, have published this
objectionable stuff. The Democrat
is not alone.
The State Press Association could
not do a better thing than discuss
this feature in all its phases at its
meeting at Salem this week, aud
unanimously agree not to publish
such matter.
A dramatic incident was that of
the identification of a murdeier by
an aged woman iu New York, almost
iu her dying moments tbe other day.
The crime occurred last May. Rhea,
the murderer, e caped and after a
long chase whm run down In Phila
delphia. Mrs. Catherine Drown, an
old woman, who bad known Shea
from childhood, was the only witness,
and she could not go t court, so
the court went to her. Propped up
by pillows, she told th* magistrate
that she saw Shea walk up behind
McMahon and deliberately shoot him
down. Cross examination failed to
change ber statements aud she fin
ished by roundly denouncing Shea.
"Your
mother,'* she exclaimed,
shaking her band at him, "was a
decent woman. Be off; 1 never want
