PEARS CANNED
IN GOOD SHAPE
The Bartlett pear crop has congre
gated itself in the Eugene cannery
and is being bandied by the employes
of the Allen t’auuing A Packing Com-
pany in good shape. Tho place pre-
I seuts a busy scene.
The pear pack commenced yester
day with about otic third the tiumlier
of hands wanted. The cause of the
shortage is the bop season, which I
takes many of the cannery girls and
i women to the bop Heids. The com
pany advertises iu this issue formore
help.
Mr. Allen said that he bad on hand
about 5000 boxes of pears ready to be
worked. With the short supply of
hands be is working the ripest up
first ami handling the others as be is
able. There will be probably another
thousand boxes come into the canuery
this year. This represents a crop of
300,000 pounds in rouDd figures for
this vicinity.
PRUNES RIPENING.
Horae sample prunes in the office
were exhibited. The samples run 12
to the pound, and this class of prunes
are worth <12 per ton. As the size
varies the price goes down. Prunes
are rapidly ripening and are already
being handled by some. The ques
tion of boxes seems to bother some
prune growers, l’he shortage is due
to all the boxes being used in hand
ling pears.
