WILL PUT UP
A SAWMILL
M. S. Barker, the enterprising pro
prietor of the Barker Gun Works, 1»
preparing to add oue more industry
to Eugene'sloug list o; manufactur
ing establishments.
He already has the timbers out for
the erection of a sawmill which will
be located ou the Willamette river,
just below tbe big wagon bridge.
He has purchased abodt l'^ acres of
ground there, including the old boat
warehouse site, which gives him am
ple room for lumber yard».
THE MILL.
Mr. Barker today informed a Guard
reporter that the new mill will have
a capacity of betweeD 10,<AM> and 15-
000 feet’ of lumlx-r per day. The
building will be 3 x120 feet in dimen
sions, exclusive of minor additions
and abutting sheds. It will be what
is known as a baud mill aud the ma
chiuery will be first class iu every re-
sped.
Mr. Barker has over half the ma
chiuery ordered, sume of it now be
ing manufactured at the Gruss Bros, I
irou works in Eugene and the re
mainder coming from Saginaw, Mich.,
aud Seattle, Wash.
If the machinery arrives in time
Mr. Barker expects to have the new
mill iu operation shortly after the !
tit -t itf Inly.
PLENTY OF TIMBER.
The new mill will have plenty of
timber to draw from. The Guard is
informed Mr. Barker has 15,000,000
feet of bis own on Fall Creek and a
great deal more is obtainable.
This is the second sawmill for Eu
gene, the Eugene Lumber Co. operat
ing oue on the river north of Skin
ner’» Butte. Of course there is room
for two mills, aud more for that uiat-
ter, and both no doubt will tlnd a
ready market for their output.
