Eugene Guard. FEBRUARY 21 SATURDAY DEFENDS A PLAIN ATTEMPT TO STEAL. Wbat must lie the opinion of Line Couuty timber owners regard ing the Euger.e Register f About the logging stream franebis« bill it Bays: The bill has been gone over oare- fnliy ami ail featuies eliminated that would in any way interfere with the rights of lumbermen, whether their interest« be large or small, and lhe measure which has already passed the house and been wisely amended in the senate should have no trouble in becoming a law. • W « in the broad commercial eenee the law is perfectly just and should be enacted. With all this pretty palaver there is not a limber-land owner along the McKensie and Willamette rivers and their tributaries that does not feel that should such a oill happen to become a law he would be robbed of a considerable part of hie holding«. There is no guesswork abiut this statement. The timber laud owners appreciate the danger, and, to a min, ondemn the meas ure. EXCUSES THE MASTER. 10 oppiaition to the logging bill the G uard says Eugeue people own *20 sections of limber on Quartz Creek and that lhe holler of a Iran* cuise on this stream would make a handsome sum off lb see owners tor ruuuing their logs. Now as we un* derslaud it there ia nothing in this proposed bill to prevent the owner« Irotn combining and taking out a franchise ou their own aooount. Toe G uard ia badly scared long be fore there is possibility of anyone truing hurt. Any individual, agio* ciatioo or corporation can take out a franchise ui.der provision» of the bill.—Register, This 1« about a« lame a defense or excuse a« possible ot a measure that if passe l would virtually oonfisoate a good ehare of the values of timber land« he;d by rtuill owners in Lans Ciuniy, Ilia asserted that “any individual, association or corpora tion can lake out a franchiss undsr lb« provisions of this bill." This is uo. iru-, at least only partially ao. The bill provides that priority of claim to the stream should carry possession of the franchise. Even th*« R*gister, we do not think, would have the hardihood to claim for a moment that lhe people who have engineered this very objectionable robeme would not tie the first lo file their surveys and maps of the streams of winch po<se»sion ie de sirable. 11 ildsra of timber lauds bad just cau*e for being “«oared” before they were “nurt.” Il was a finely oon* co t <1 scheme. CHANCE TO GET BRAINS EOK SENATE. The casting of the greater part of M ulttiomah’s vole tor ex-governor G*er for astiktor yesterday makes it apparent that the Geer force« will go lo Editor Soo it of the Ore* gouiau wbauever called upon. (Guard Special Service. ) Gueheu, Feb. 18.—Mr. Winters, who baa live>i alone on his farm uear the t 'oast Fork bridge for a year or so, has sol«i his farm to Chester Winters, his nephew, and has moved to Eugene to reside in the future. W. J. Mulkey, of Monmouth, who has l>een visiting his sou Chauucy, of Pleasant Hill, returned home Monday. Alex Stewart and wife, of Waitsburg, Wash., stopped off here Sunday ou their way home from an extended Eastern trip, and visited with his brother, Wm. Stewart for a few days. Miss Auuie Kujietz came up from Eugeue Mon«lay to visit her parents. A. A. Keeney, who was visiting his brother, B. F., here, went to Eugene Monday where he will visit for a day or so with his brother, J. M., before leaving for Tacoma. It is rumored that Will Elliott is thinking of taking a position of night clerk in a Creswell hotel. M. B. Taliafero, of Natron, visited with his son-in-law, B. F. Keeney, Wednesday. Henry Streeter has gone to Douglas, Eastern Oregon, to engage iu work there. J. II. Hamilton, section foreman here for the 8. P. Co., was the man who prevented a wreck at this place Saturday morning, when the delayeii north bound overland express train ran into Goshen six minutes ahead of time ami was stopped by Mr. Hamil ton’s frantic signals when under full headway. This avoided a head-end collision with the south bound work train which was making for the pas sing track at the depot. The trains were stopped within but a few feet of each other—so close that the engineer and fireman on the work train appre- hended their danger and jump«xi from their engine before engineer “Curly” McQua«i, of the overland, stopixxl hiB train. A debt of gratitude is due Mr. flamiltou on the part of the passen gers and train men for thus preventing a very serious wreck. Mr. Bangs, through our stage driver, Mr. C. M. Parker, requests all patrons along the route (Dexter-Goshen), to provide mail pouches or sacks for their mail, which is carried free along “Star” routes. This request is occas- sioned by reason of some complaints having been made relative to the mis placement of mail which through mis take sometimes occurred. It is our opinion that while these mistakes did occur, the principal “kickers” were those who were not familar with the law to the extent of knowing that they were receiving daily accommcsla- tions from the carrier who has never refused to take up letters left tn way side boxes, although the law does not require it of him. Some people do not appreciate ac«'<>nim<idations. Mrs. Lois Nye, who lias lieen visit ing her sister, «Mrs. J. II. Hamilton, will return to her home iu Portland tomorrow.
