Address by President Frank Strong of the State University. Presentation of diplomas by W M Miller, oouuty superintendent. Orxonlan, M»y 21. Andrew Carnegie quito busineee with »200,000,000 io cm»h. liuw did he gel so vaat a earn? I'nnaar- ily through the favor of the Gov ernment, which “proteoted” him ‘ Hgainat foreign competition during long year«, while he used hie op- j poriunity to deny to labor its just •hare and at tbe name time to ex tort from consumers unconscion able prices. Tbe donation of »10,000,000 which he is now mak ing so ostentatiously in Scotland was taken away from those to whom it rightfully belonged in America. Observe that Carnegie got this money under pretense of “protecting’’ the American work ingman. It is a consistent outcome ot the whole oollossal fraud that tbe money now goes to Euroj>e. It is needless to remark tbat the Oregonian would not tell tbe truth about the protective tariff robbery if there was an election on hand. Anyway tbe millions piled up by Carnegie, Rockefeller, and men of their ilk, have been unjustly taken from the people through the operation of sjiecial laws. Tbe Oregonian says all when it says the piling up of tbe immense Carnegie fortune was made ¡xMsible “through the favor of the government,’’ while he denied “to labor its just share,” and extorted “from consumers unconscionable prices.” Nothing more could be added in condemna tion of the folly of protection. PORTLAND'S ANNUAL WATER. HIGH Portland will have no flood this June. Indications are that the Columbia has reached its high- water stage, 18.8 feet at Portland from hackwater. The Columbia car fnruish plenty of water when all conditions are favorable—big snows in the mountains that feed it, a oold backward spring, then sudden summer heat to bring the snow out with a rush. In the oentenuial year Portland hud 33 feet of water much of the business portion of the city being ■ubmerged. The Dalles, though, broke all records, the water piling up a height of 59 feet and 7 inches above low water. Jt was not back water at that town, either, it being situated on the bank of the river. To anyone who ia familiar with the width of the great river at The Dalles the volume of water poured out in such a flood stage is simple inooncievable. e* .................... The Oregon Timberman say- that “experience has dem one', rat d in order to get the best results from Oregon oak for finishing pur poses, and prevent checking, it should be boiled for 24 hours, ■tioked and laid away in a dark room for seasoning, which requires at least a year. At the end of this time the lumber in in condition to use for any purpose required.” That it makes an elegant finish will not be questioned by anyone who has observed the interiors of the Loan and Savings and First National banks ot Eugene. Our Oregon oak makes a rich and elegant finish when properly seasoned and worked. Exhales from children as fragrance from flowers.
