the larger cities of Brazil and the

height of its popularity, and al

some of tne social leaders, who
boldly went in for the sport so soon
as they had mastered their wheels,
and now there are as many petti

Buenos Ayres is perhaps the
greatest cycling center in South
America, where at certaiu hours of
the day the entire city seems lobe

leading to beautiful parks in the
euhurban districts, and along these

NICARAGUA CANAL
New York dlipatch.
Erection of fortification» would
make the canal one of the prime
objective» of our enemy’s <>|>era
ations in time of war. B»»ide»
their construction would entail
enormous expense aud necessitate
constant expenditure to keep them
manned and in proper condition
I see no necessity for them. The
neutrality of the canal can he
guaranteed by our fleet. The
canal is to be a commercial water
way, and neutralization therefore
will in ian it« preservation.
A teacher in an Indian aohool in
Michigan writes that Die buys have
a sense of humor. “In my flag
drill last Friday the partners were
a boy and a girl, and where the

go first, and hard trouble I had to
do it, too. After the exercises Isaac

ting the girls p iss in front of the
buys you have struck at the root of
an Indian custom. 1 said,'How so,

custom for the tnan go first, carry

British yachtsmen interested in
the new candidate fur cup honors
will not allow the yacht to be sailed
the first time next Friday, the day
on which she will be ready, but will
postpone the the first trial trip

captains aver they are not super
stitious, yet see no sutlicient reason
for "tempting providence by start
ing her on her racing career on
Friday." ______________
