The Oregon senators and con gressmen are not hurt with modesty. Associated Press dispatches from Washington concerning Oregon af fairs are manufactured by a cor respondent who is in close touch with the Oregon delegation. Hence we are not suprised to read in an Oregonian Washington dispatch of December 21 that “the total amount provided for Oregon improvements, as reported in the river and harbor bill, is 12,840,500, while Washing ton gets but 1130,500. Then the figures are given. Those flguree do not lie, although the correspondent did. They show that two-thirds of the entire amount of this "Oregon” appropriation will be expended on the improvement of the mouth of the Columbia river, while one-third of the remainder will be spent improving the Columbia river channel above the mouth. The Columbia and its principal tributary, Snake river, flow several hundred miles in the state of Washington but not one foot, exclusively, in Oregon. Acodrding to the most conserva tive estimates of lumbermen the total consumption of timber in Ore gon thio year will approximate 900,« 000,000 feet. This is the estimate of A J Johnson, the forestry expert, of Astoria. Of this amount he oredita tbs mills with 500,000,000 feet, and flguree that 400,000,000 was used for fuel, fence poets, rails etc. Mr Johnson also estimates that nearly 2,000,000,000 test of timber was oonsumed by forest firee this year, despite the fact that great diligence was exercised by forest rangers to prevent fires and extinguish them. mw .
