W ashington , August 2.—The information coming to
the war department during the past 24 hours about affairs
m China is not in the least reassuring for the safety and
continued well being of the foreigners in Pekin.
Li Hung Chang has notified representatives of the vari
ous governments that he will offer to provide a safe escort
for the ministers to Fein Tsin, provided the allied march
on Pekin cease at once. Secretary of State John Hay very
bluntly demands communication with Minister Conger be
fore he will agree to anything.
The allied forces number 20,000 men and the artillery
has 170 guns. They expect to reach Pekin by August 12.
The fact that this force is not tolerent but very earnest is
the cause of the message by Li Hung Chang. Secretary
Hay along with representatives of other countries is deter
mined to know the exact status of affairs before any con
cession will be granted to Chinese diplomats, whereby they
may evade any responsibility for the misdeeds of Boxers
ami other disturbing elements.

8 >ecial to the Guard.
L ondon , August 2.—Sir Claude Macdonald, the British
minister at Pekin has succeeded in getting a personal re
port through to his government. He states that provisions
are plenty, but that ammunition is very short. This is vir
tually the same news as sent out by Conger several days
ago, and probably left Pekin at the same time.
SHAH OF PERSIA.

P aris , August 2.—An attempt lias been made to assas
sinate the Shah of Persia, but it was not successful. The
assailant was arrested with arms still in his possession.

Higû Estimate.
The Daily Mining Journal,published ,
at Marquette, Michigan, publishes a
dispatch from Marinette, Wisconsin,
which , says:
"It looks now as though Marinette
aud Menominee lumbermen would
close one of the biggest timber deals
and probably the largest ever made in
one transfer. Four Marinette cruisers
—G W Holmes, Hugh McMillan,
James Fitzpatrick ami Charles Beut-
ley—have left f«>r Portland, Oregon, to
look over a tract ot fir, spruce and pine
timberonthe Willamette river.
“It embraces over 10o,990 acre» of
land which will scale between two
and three billion feet of lumber, The
consideration, if tbe deal is made, wil|
be over $750,090. The men who eX-
pect to buy it are Isaac Stephenson
aud Henry Swart, of this city, and 8
M Stephenson atid William Holmes,
of Meuominee, Micb. They have an
option on it and tbe cruisers will make
a final trip over it to confirm the esti
mates of timber. There is little doubt
that tbe deal will be made. Tbe tilD-
