A well-known oil expert has the fol-
lowing toijyv about the California oil
industry
The oil production of California it
now aiout t.ouo,ooo barrels annually.
This output la being increased verv
materially each month bv the product
of the new wells ,lj«led to oil in the
different districts.
Th« question most « <|uently asked
me. especially by capitalists and those
interested or likely to be interested in
oil investments is: “la there not a
poMHibility of overproduction of oil in
California?”
There are two main belts extending
through the state, located on the east
ern and western shores of ancient, pre
historic seas. One of these produces a
black and essentially fuel oil, and the
other a green or gas oil.
The black or heavy oil make, an
ideal fuel, as lias been proven by ao
reais of experience iu Rugala and ill
this couuti y.
In using oil as a fuel
to exercise considerable judgment, ami
to know what kimLof oil as well as
what kind of a burner to us,'.
The two oils, the black and the
greeu, lie almost in two parallel belts
iu California extending on the west
side of the San Joaquin valley and run
ning uortli and south into northern and
southern California.
there is likewise
a similar condition on the east side ot
the San Joaquin more or less iu evi-
deuce as is show n by the outcroppings
and geological formation.
The vast
side of the valley, however, has not yet
been prospected for oil >A has the west
side, where developments have already
been, and wh^re by fur the largest
amouut of the oil output of California
is at present obtained.
It is true that many far-seeing capi
talists have entered into the oil busi
ness and have reaped rich tiiianeial re
turns already, others have been too
conservative and are losing opportuni
ties which are fast being taken up bv
Eastern capitalists, who art^rapidlv ap
preciating the chance California gives
for investments.

of July. If this wish had been granted,
it ia safe to say that the worthy gentle
man who expressed it would hare been
exceedingly surprised. During the cen
tury's sleep, says the St. Louie Repub
lic, America had advanced from a state
of tutelage into a vig'.rous state of inde
pendence. and the joy of her people at
finding their forefathers' dream of liberty
fully realized was never more character
istically shown than on the day that
marked the centennial celebration of the
country's greatest holiday. Verily, the
visitor from the land of shades would
1iave l>een amazed at the sights and
sounds of that splendid anniversary. In
z word, he would have found himself in
an entirely new world.
How amazed this worthy eighteenth
century patriot would be if he eonld only
shake off his shroud and take a look at
his Fatherland during the Fourth of
July. He would then see bow great are
the strides which the country has taken
since that ever-memorable day, when he
bravely signed his name to the most Im
portant document that was ever formu
lated in America, and it would not take
him long to realize the fact that the Unit
ed States have grown greatly in many
directions since their people celebrated
the centennial anniverdhry of the Fourth

nent the battle of Gettysburg, the sur
render of VI. ksfitarg and th* death# ,of
John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.
Strictly speaking, the battle of Gettys
burg began on July 1, 18»i3. and ended
on July 3. but ever since It took place It
has in the minds of the people been as
aociated with the Fourth. AR^ma and
Jefferson died within a few hours of each
other on the fiftieth anniversary of the
ieclaration of independence. Jefferson
died first, and, curiously enough. Adams'
last words were: "Thomaa Jefferson still
survives.”
Singularly enough, our method of cele
brating the Fourth does not differ In
many respect» from that which wan in
vogue half a century ago. Then, as now,
patriots everywhere made the day an oc-
. a.ion for delivering speeches, for esting
dinners, for attending picnic», dan.-es and
other forms of merrymaking, and for
ringing bells and firing off cannon« The
