In addition to the burden of such a debt, there is the annual interest which the many have to pass over to the few in the form of products before they can think ot having anything for their own mouths and backs. All national debts are paid from the earnings of labor, but the blessings of war, for which we are told national debts are largely in curred, do not fall to those who labor to any great extent. Public School Examination. WILL INCREASE HIS MAJORITY. The Register after weeks making a failure of trying to justify the debt of 1123,000 hanging over Lane county, on May l«th, concluded to use the same kind of b-.ld assertions concerning the running of the sheriff's office. The article Is made up of glaring misstatement concocted for the purpose of deceiving the public. We predict this attack on Sheriff Withers will prove a veritable boomerang, as It should. A BK1KF HISTORY. Nearly two years ago Sberit elect Withers was summoned from bis faru near Thurston, to Euvece by special messenger. Sheriff Johnson immediately vacated lhe office and Mr. Withers was Installed on the morning of July 4th, several days previous to the time sat, bis bonds not even being made out. The reason for tbls was that oue of the most cold blo'ided murders ever k> own In Oregon bad been committed ou the summit of the Cascade mountains. Old Johu Linn bad been shot and burned The public will remember all the details. Mr. Withers immediately entered on the chase, aud for eight or ten daye was either on the cars or In the raddle continuously. Afterwards he bad much to do in hunting up the evidence, going to Eastern Oregon sev. eral times, that proved the murder and brought the des troyers of John Linn to jsst punishment. Prosecuting Attorney Brown and Deputy ProeecutlDg Attorney Harris commended Sheriff Withers highly and will tell anyone today that be is amoug the leading sheriffs of Oregon. All the Northwest press, including tbe Register, praised Mr. Withers highly. He con ducted the only execution for Lane county aud everybody sang bis praises. This was an expensive case, but the taxpayers would have doubled the amount, if necessary, to hunt d >wn and punish the murderers. They will not repudiate now, either. Sheriff Johns >n, in 1894, was tono expense neither was bis offioe charged a oeut tor closing up the tax rolls. The delinquent property was sold under Sheriff Noland’s management. When he, Johnson, left the office in 1898, be left a delinquent tax roll of $15,632.95- This was expensive aDd was charged up to Sheriff Withers’account. (The Register forgot to mention this.) Again, as is a well known fact, Sheriff Withers inut done the justice criminal work that Mr. Johuson left eutirely to the constables. Constable Fireman, a few days ago resigned because of the “ktarvatisu business.” Formerly, constables found ttie office to be a good one and it was much sought after. This, of course, was not mentioned by the Register. During four years Johnson took 12 criminals to the State penitentiary; in 22 months Withers took 16 aud executed 1. But the Register says uotblug. Aud again, the board of prisoners In the county jidl which goes to some hotel, shows: Johnson's last 22 months, cost >715.23; Withers’ 22 months, 11447.69; difference 1732.46 Aud it must t>e remembered that this Is also charged up to the sheriff’s acoount. But the "fair" Register forgets this. Sheriff Withers, dLyiug his 22 months of office has arrested 40 men. His running down of Pete McDonell, the Junction burglar, said to be one of the shrewdest professionals on tbeCoast, proves that he Is a detective of uo mean ability. Johnson in four years ouly arrested 4 or 5 men. Mr. Register, you also over looked thia. Every bill presented to the Commissioners Court hss been allowed in full.
