"At (tin the evening; came word form I.eiianon: 'We will lone this county by iKH).' A little later the telephone hrou;lit another inefMii;e: Vumhill lost by il'iO.' These were the heavy gum) of the enemy. At 7:;) a telegram arrives: 'alem is against im 121K) stroii);.' Then following a silence, when strong men clenched their hands ami looked into each other's eyes with the fear of defeat. Were two years of faithful work to count for nothing? Must the long road he gone over again? For he it known by the people of Oregon that never once did the r doubtable committee, or the friends, faculty and students of the University think of abandoning their cause." "A whole city was tense with excitement. On the college campus there wan no studying. Students clung to the telephones eager for tha last word. But the sanguine freshman shared none of these alarms. That happy species of animal knows neither anxiety or terror. Quite calmly, as il all were decided and the fate of a commonwealth did not hang in Hie balance, the freshman gathered huu wood for a great celebration. He lieaped up a mighty bonfire pile ready to light in the evening. At the very top, on a large green pole was put a tar barrel. To the freshman this symbolized the referendum: he was preparing to celebrate its downfall. "A city was transformed overnight. It awoke on the morning of June 3 to find its heart s desire attained. Swift and sharp was the contrast between previous despair and the present joy. The university and, the city of Eugene went mad. A monster rally was soon in preparation, Then, it was that the wisdom of the freshman became apparent." Mrs. Foscoe Shipley Is Dead. Died, at Monmouth, Oregon, June 15, 1908, of heart failure,.
