Mr. Heuey in public jeecli are
hiirjirifed with the fon-tful iin
pliciiy of the man, a simplicity
with a ring of eineerity that car.
riod conviction to hi auditors.
His speeches are good to hour.
There is no one who would he
disco in tit ted by it hut those who
quake under the light of right
eous investigation. Oregon, ns
well as every other state in the
union, would profit by having a
Ileney in its every county.
It is unfortunate, on the ether
hand, that a man cannot engage
in a work of lofty spirit and no
ble purpose and nt the same time
retain the confidence mid sup
port of the people cs u unit.
Such is, however, the case with
all great reformers, r.ndever has
been. Mr. Ileney is now being
persecuted by. the great news
papers of the Pacific coast, and it
is not unreasonable to presume
that, through the organization of
the associated press of the world,
all newspapers of that organiza
tion will unite t destroy this
great man. In many cases, as
Mr. Ileney says, graft is the
stimulant which inspires these
newspaper attacks, as in the case
of the Argonaut of Sau Fran
cisco, while on the other hand,
ihe motive is discovered in news
miners whose past records of
dealing do not bear investiga
tion, 01 more probably the di
rectors of these papers are of
fenders of the law in other deal
ings outside the newspaper and
who pollute t heir papers to screen
their other nefarious and unlaw
ful acts.

at large. While perhaps not a
necessity in school work yet the effect
of music in the life of a pupil is most
salutary.
In jsTfect fairness to all we feel
warranted in saying that the methods
adopted in the training department
by the principal, L. It. Truver, are re
ceiving the hearty endorsements of
all, and are proving their merits by
the excellent results obtained. Mr.
Traver has long studied the problems
of the graded and ungraded schools
from the practical as well as theoret
ical side and his methods are the re
sult of careful and painstaking labor.
Particular stress is laid upon the
fundamental branches and the drills
in English and mathematics give the
pupils a clear conception of the re
sults to be obtained. This is main
tained throughout the whole nine
grades. The work of the critic
teachers is both very helpful to the
pupils as well as to the student
teachers.
