Ratee on display advertising made known en application.? GOOD THOUGHTS. It is well to brf governed by our admirations rather than by our disgusts. To be in the iron grip of our dislikes is not a con dition of peace. When gov erned by the ruling admirations of our lives, by the things we like, the people we love, the ob jects we worship, rather than by the things and people and ob jects we dislike, is one of the conditions of peace which is an inexhaustible fountain of daily help. William Rader discusses this theme in the San Francisco Bulletin and his treatise is worth study. Says Mr. Rader: Disgusts breed fast. They are prolific. The habit of dis gust is a growing habit. It cre ates kindred tendencies. Ouce contracted, the victim is never again satisfied with life and its possessions. He is discontented with himself, and finds life a burden. When a man thinks more often of his enemies than of bis friends, of the vices than the virtues of humanity, and dwells more upon the swamps and quicksands under his feet than the stars aud the clear blue above hi3 head, then he is ruled by his disgusts rather than his' admirations. lne renex influence oi our admirations upon our characters i3 a matter which all who would improve themselves should study. Our disgusts mar the beauty of the soul. They penetrate deep into the nature, while the admiration of our reason and love touch the deeper notes be cause they reach down to the hidden heartstrings. It is the soul of man which, with eyes thirsting for beauty, sees the beautiful and the good. Any 6ort of a man may show his utter, unintelligent hatred, his proud, impertinent and in discriminating disgust, whereas it requires a soul, a mind, a true human to admire, to see and hear and know. ' The disgusts which sweep over us, and which we learn to like, leave a sediment of poison in the life which is nnwhole Bome and unhealthful. To learn to admire with sincerity is a path to enjoyment. To learn to be disgusted with the persons met, the music heard, art seen, books read, is to take upon our selves the limitations of a bigot and the tribulations of one who has cultivated the habit of look ing on the dark side of life. Disgust is often necessary. It acts as a corrective of extrava gant hope and vain optimism. It has its place, but to be ruled Governor Chamberlain cer tainly has A right to irrigate. II has been made president of the National Irrigation Organi zation. The Amity Enterprise would have II. Hirschberg a blooded high-roller and scatter 11000 in uickels among the youngsters if hops go to 25 cents. The Independence National Bank was capitalized at $50,- 000. Every dollar of the capital stock has been paid back to the stockholders and the bank goes right on declaring dividends. That's the way investments in Independence pay. The Albany Democrat won ders what will happen to Col. Hofer, editor of the Salem Jour nal, for publishing the false in sinuation that the editor of the West Side Enterprise is mar ried. Didn't the Democrat ob serve that Colonel Hofer's head went last week as president of the Willamette Valley Develop ment League? Watch him lose his job as editor of the Salem paper next. Just then one of the waiters brought in a lot of sprats (a species of small fish very popular in Eng land), whereupon one man re marked boastingly, ."My partner and I can eat a bushel of them." The statement was naturally re ceived with incredulity, but he of fered to make it the subject of a wager. His offer accepted, a bushel of sprats was brought in and the man ate his fill of them. "Now," Baid the boaster, "I will bring in my partner," and he called in an old sow. FOR SAI.K Full PoUi'l riilim l..ar ami a ( gilu, hrd. Cha. llift.
