A committee of Marion cuimty
citizens will wait ou the Marion
county court and a committee of
Polk county citizen will wait ou
the Tolk couuty court at the
sitting of each body on the first
of next month to ask that the
two t-ounties operate a ferry
across the river at Independence.
The committee that w ill appear
before the Marion couuty court
will bo composed of citizens of
Marion county having residence
and business interests in that
part of the county opposite In
dependence. The Polk county
committee will be composed of
Polk county citizens of the In
dependence vicinity. These
committees will tell the courts
that the citizens directly interest
ed propose to buy or put in a
new ferry to present to the two
counties clear of debt and ask
that the counties bear the ex
pense of maintenance. It is
proper and well that the mem
bers of the two courts know in
advance what will be asked and
: what will be offered. Benton
and Linn counties maintain a
free ferry at Corvallis and an
other at a small place called
Peoria. Marion and Polk oper
ate no ferry over the dividing
stream but do maintain a large
bridge at Salem. Of the burden
f maintenance of this bridge,
Polk bears one third.
The country on either side of
the river has developed to that
. extent, and traffic back and forth
across the stream at this point
reached such proportions that
a free ferry has come ' to be
public necessity. from now
until next Christmas the ferry
will be in greater demand than
it was even last year. For
weeks at a time last fall, the
ferry was compelled to run un
til 2 o'clock in the morning to
accommodate the travel and
during the day teams awaiting
their turn blocked the way from
"the ferry landing for rod3 away.
There is already a healthy traf
fic this year which will increase
until after hop-picking season
and the traffic thi3 year 'Will un
doubtedly surpass that of any
preceding year. A toll ferry is
an obstacle to the growing com
merce between the two counties
and the maintenance of a free
ferry is a very proper duty of
the two counties.

Why don't the West Side En
terprise go after people for , not
cleaning ' up their alleys and
back-yards? asks a lady reader.
The suggestion is timely. Both
health and civic pride demand
that the old tin cans, barrel
staves, old shoes and other rub
bish be raked up and disposed
of. All places of any preteuse
are cleaning up for the year
1905. It's a fact that there is
some cleaning up of unfrequent
ed alleys to be done in Inde
pendence and if you don't want
to be talked about you will have
to clean tip your rubbish.
